Superman, arguably the most famous hero in the DC Universe, is in big trouble. The DC Universe has been facing a major crisis since Darkseid came back and started messing with time. After wiping out the future, Darkseid aimed to take over everything. In a desperate attempt to save the universe, DC’s heroes and villains were forced to compete for a power that could finally defeat him. Superman, with the fate of everything at stake, had to join the fight.
Watching Superman compete in DC K.O. has been fascinating. The tournament forces contestants to fight with the same ruthlessness as Darkseid, which clashes with Superman’s inherently good nature. However, like the other fighters, he’s been pushed to his limits. I initially thought DC might be building towards Superman becoming the tournament’s ultimate champion, King Omega, and transforming him into something more powerful. But recent events suggest a much darker outcome for the Man of Steel, and it all stems from his most iconic foe.
Lex Luthor Pulls Out a Shocking Win and Becomes King Omega

The fourth round of challenges in DC K.O. #4 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Javi Fernández, Xermánico, Alejandro Sánchez, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou pits Superman, Wonder Woman, Joker, and Lex Luthor against the corrupted Absolute Trinity. Seeing defeat likely, Joker surprisingly joins forces with Darkseid’s allies. Superman and Wonder Woman battle their twisted counterparts, while Joker takes kryptonite from Lex to help Absolute Batman fight Superman. The situation looks grim, but Prime Batman thankfully returns after his adventure in Knightfight.
Once Batman defeats the Joker, the main Justice League – Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman – each face their corrupted counterparts. The heroes are equally powerful, but Superman manages to trap his alternate self in a crystal prison. Clark then discovers that Darkseid, disguised as Booster Gold, is controlling the corrupted heroes. Superman focuses all his strength into a single punch, breaking Darkseid’s control over Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman. But Darkseid isn’t finished; he breaks free from Booster Gold’s body, prepared to defeat the remaining heroes and win the battle.
It was a brutal final stand. So many heroes went all-out in one last attack, but Darkseid’s Omega Beams just took them down. In the end, it came down to me – Superman – and, unbelievably, Lex Luthor, who I’d accidentally shielded. Instead of facing Darkseid, Lex made the shocking decision to attack me. As I fell, turned to stone like the others, the tournament ended. And Lex Luthor? He was crowned King Omega, gaining power that almost matched Darkseid’s. It was a truly unbelievable finish.
Sorry, Superman Fans, But Lex Luthor is Putting That Power to Use

I really thought Superman had this competition in the bag, but looking back, I should have predicted Lex Luthor would find a way to interfere. Knowing what DC has planned, this shouldn’t have been a surprise. If you’ve seen the March announcements for DC Comics, you’ll notice Superman is completely absent from the current DC Universe. He’s not appearing in any of the Superman titles, or even in Justice League Unlimited. And interestingly, the cover of Justice League Unlimited #17 prominently features Lex Luthor.
We’re still discovering the full extent of King Omega’s abilities, but reports suggest he’s capable of almost anything. With immense cosmic power, Lex Luthor could potentially revive fallen heroes, restore Earth, or even exile Darkseid. However, despite all that, it’s widely believed his ultimate goal isn’t saving the world, but finally eliminating Superman and claiming the title of Earth’s greatest hero for himself.
Lex Luthor’s actions feel true to his character and explain why Superman isn’t involved in the upcoming DC event. Though there’s a small chance things could change, I’m preparing for the worst. I was hoping Superman would become King Omega and have an epic showdown with Darkseid, but it looks like he’s about to be completely removed from the DC Universe. I don’t believe Luthor would wield that much power for any other reason, and sadly, that likely means Superman is doomed.
