2024 was a tough year for movies. Production shutdowns caused by strikes meant fewer films were released, and box office numbers weren’t great overall. However, the year still offered some excellent films, from critically acclaimed dramas and huge blockbusters to innovative independent releases. Highlights included Sean Baker’s award-winning Anora and Pixar’s popular Inside Out 2. If you want to watch these 2024 favorites again, time is running out, as they’re starting to leave HBO Max.
As a big fan of the Mad Max films, I was bummed to hear that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is leaving HBO Max on February 15th. It arrived on the platform last July, and while it didn’t do amazing numbers at the box office – earning $174 million with a $168 million budget – I thought it was a really solid entry in the series. Plus, critics seemed to agree, giving it a “Certified Fresh” rating with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences loved it too, with an 88% rating! It’s a shame it’s going, but hopefully it’ll be available elsewhere soon.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Is a High-Octane Origin Story That Expands the Dystopian Wasteland Lore
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a big job: to build upon the world of Mad Max as a prequel to the popular Fury Road, and it delivers. The film is a bold, character-focused story about overcoming hardship, dealing with loss, and finding hope, connecting Furiosa’s origins to the events of Fury Road. It shows her 15-year journey from a kidnapped child to the fierce warrior we meet in the 2015 film, enriching the world of the Wasteland. The film moves beyond simply being a backdrop, creating a detailed history with new places, complex politics, and a sense of a world that’s constantly changing. It expertly combines this emotional depth with thrilling, practical action sequences, making for a truly powerful and exciting movie.
It’s currently uncertain if the world of Mad Max will continue. A sequel to Fury Road, called Mad Max: The Wasteland, was initially announced in 2015. However, the disappointing box office performance of Furiosa appears to have put future Mad Max movies on hold, despite director George Miller’s ongoing desire to make a sixth film.
Where to Stream Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga After It Leaves HBO Max?
If you’re a fan of Furiosa and Mad Max, you’ll want to watch it on HBO Max soon, as it’s leaving the platform in just a few days. Currently, it’s not available on any other streaming services, and it won’t be added to another one this month after being removed on February 15th. While it might return to a major streaming service later in March or beyond, the only way to be sure you can watch it is to rent or buy it online.
