Sasha Obama Makes Rare Appearance With Parents Barack & Michelle Obama

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama‘s courtside outing served as a double bonus.

The Obama family’s youngest daughter, 24-year-old Sasha Obama, was spotted with her parents at the NBA All-Star Game on February 15th.

At the event in Inglewood, California, Michelle Obama wore a black jacket with dark navy pants. Barack Obama chose a dark blue jacket, a black T-shirt, and gray jeans. Their daughter, Sasha, who was seated behind them, wore a gray outfit that matched her father’s jeans.

Michelle happily shared a photo of her family enjoying a rare night out, writing online, “My favorite people, both on and off the court!”

Although Sasha, like her older sister Malia Obama, 27, doesn’t often appear in public, Michelle recently discussed the challenges of raising her daughters while Barack was president. She revealed they even had a special term for the intense pressure they faced.

She referred to it as the ‘Obama tax’ during an April interview on SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, explaining that while it’s a lifelong obligation, it also comes with numerous advantages.

Though, Michelle explained that such a period was undoubtedly “a lot of work.”

She explained that they were incredibly busy with typical high school and early adult experiences. They juggled driving, attending prom, participating in sports with travel, searching for colleges, going to parties, experimenting with alcohol, and even trying smoking – basically, everything you’d expect teenagers to do.

As her children grew up, Michelle focused on a few key principles. She explained, “I want them to feel like things are normal, because I don’t want them to become self-absorbed or believe this attention is all about them. I want them to just live their lives.”

Michelle wanted her children to understand that life isn’t centered around their own needs, explaining, “This isn’t about you; it’s simply part of your dad’s work.”

Barack Obama and Michelle met while working at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin. Barack took the job to help pay off his student loans, and Michelle was assigned to mentor him during his summer associate position.

Barack Obama once described being immediately impressed by Michelle’s height and beauty. He told O, The Oprah Magazine in 2007 that Michelle was also pleasantly surprised to discover his nose and ears weren’t as large as they appeared in a photo he’d used for the firm’s directory.

After their first meeting, it took a while for Michelle to agree to go out on a date with Barack. 

He confessed that he asked her on a date repeatedly, but she kept turning him down. She explained, ‘I’m your advisor, and a relationship wouldn’t be professional.’ Eventually, he offered to resign from his position, and she finally agreed to go out with him.

Oh my gosh, their first date was perfect! They saw Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing – can you even imagine?! – and then, get this, they went to Baskin-Robbins afterward and shared their first kiss! Seriously, it’s the most adorable thing ever. I’ve seen that movie like a million times just thinking about them!

In a 2018 interview with 20/20, Michelle described their first kiss as the moment everything changed. She said he kissed her gently, and from that point on, they were in love and officially a couple.

Two years after they started dating, Barack proposed to Michelle over dinner at a restaurant in Chicago. She was surprised because she didn’t realize he was ready to get married.

Oh my god, can you believe it? She wrote about this in her book, Becoming, and it just kills me. He actually took her hand – her hand! – and told her he loved her, but then…then he said he didn’t really get it. Like, didn’t understand us! I swear, I could feel her blush just reading it. It was like, ‘Seriously? We’re having this conversation now?’ It’s just…heartbreaking, honestly. I replay it in my head constantly.

The couple had been discussing whether or not to get married during dinner, but their conversation stopped abruptly when the waiter brought dessert. Instead of cake, Michelle found a small, dark velvet box on her plate – and inside was a diamond ring.

Barack had been teasing me the whole time. It was all a playful trick, and it took me a moment to realize I wasn’t supposed to be angry. He’d gotten a rise out of me intentionally, because he promised this would be the last time he ever brought up our silly marriage debate – ever.

Over a year after he proposed on their first date, Barack and Michelle Obama got married on October 3rd at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Michelle Obama shared a sweet memory of her wedding day in 1992, recalling that Barack woke up with a bad cold, but felt much better by the time they said their vows. They danced nearly all night and, twenty-five years later, she says they’re still enjoying life together while continuing to support each other and work on their relationship. She added that she couldn’t imagine sharing life’s adventures with anyone else.

Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, was born in Chicago on July 4, 1998. After growing up largely in the White House, she went on to graduate from Harvard University in 2021. She’s now pursuing her own career in entertainment, and recently chose to be credited as Malia Ann in her 2024 short film, “The Heart.”

Barack Obama recounted a conversation with his daughter Malia on The Pivot Podcast about her decision to leave her last name off of something she was doing. He said he pointed out that people would likely recognize her, but she wanted people to experience it without any preconceived notions based on her family name. Obama believes his daughters actively avoid using their family connections to their advantage.

Sasha Obama was born on June 10, 2001. When her family moved into the White House, she was just seven years old, making her the youngest child to live there since John F. Kennedy Jr., who was two months old in 1961. She graduated from the University of Southern California in May 2023.

Michelle shared a sweet birthday message for her daughter Sasha on Instagram, celebrating Sasha’s 24th birthday in June 2025. Along with a rare family photo, Michelle wrote, “Happy birthday to my sweet girl! Time really flies. I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become. Love you always!”

Barack Obama’s success in the Illinois state senate paved the way for his election to the U.S. Senate. Initially, however, his wife Michelle wasn’t eager to become involved in politics.

In her book, Becoming, Michelle Obama wrote that she wasn’t a fan of politicians and was hesitant about her husband entering politics.

Despite her qualms, she supported Barack throughout his campaign and time in office. 

You know, looking back, I really had a moment of clarity even while I was going through it all. I shared with Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes a few years ago that my partner’s willingness to forgive me, to stick with me through everything… that was truly an act of grace. In 2008, after winning the election, Barack Obama publicly thanked his wife, who would become the First Lady.

In his victory speech, Barack Obama credited his wife, Michelle, with being his constant support, saying, ‘I wouldn’t be here tonight without her. She’s been my best friend for 16 years, the strength of our family, and the love of my life – and soon, the nation’s First Lady.’

Barack and Michelle Obama were separated on their 20th wedding anniversary because Barack was in Denver, Colorado, for the first presidential debate of the 2012 election. Despite being apart, he made sure to publicly acknowledge and celebrate her.

Tonight, I want to say that the best thing that ever happened to me was when Michelle Obama married me twenty years ago,” the former president shared. “Happy anniversary, my love. Next year, we won’t be celebrating with 40 million viewers, but it will be just as special.

Barack’s opponent, Mitt Romney even joined in on the well wishes. 

During the debate, Mitt Romney congratulated President Obama on his anniversary, adding with a touch of humor, “I’m sure this is the most romantic place you could have hoped for – right here with me.”

The Obamas later celebrated with a dinner at Bourbon Steak in Georgetown. 

Barack Obama won a second term as President of the United States in 2012. The victory was a moment of celebration not just for him, but also for his wife, Michelle, who was a strong supporter and played a key role in his campaign.

In 2011, on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Barack Obama openly shared his gratitude for Michelle, stating he couldn’t have achieved anything without her. He described her as not only an excellent First Lady, but also his constant source of strength and support, someone he relies on daily.

In his farewell address, Barack Obama warmly thanked his wife for her support.

In his 2017 farewell speech, Barack Obama spoke directly to his wife, Michelle, expressing his deep appreciation. He said that for the past 25 years, she hadn’t just been his wife and the mother of their children, but also his closest friend. He acknowledged she stepped into the public role of First Lady without seeking it, and excelled with elegance, strength, and a wonderful sense of humor, making him and the nation proud.

Since leaving office in 2017, Barack and Michelle Obama have enjoyed a more private life, which Barack Obama has said has been a welcome relief for his wife.

Barack Obama shared in 2020 that Michelle seemed more at ease and happier since they’d left the White House. He said it allowed them to fully appreciate their long-lasting love and reconnect as friends.

The couple posted sweet tributes for each other on social media to celebrate 30 years of marriage. 

Michelle Obama celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with Barack Obama, sharing a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “These past 20 years have been an amazing adventure, and I’m so thankful to have him with me. I love you @BarackObama! Here’s to many more years together.”

And he quickly returned the favor.

Barack Obama playfully commented on Instagram, wondering why his partner hasn’t aged after 30 years while he has. He then sweetly added that finding his life partner was the best luck he could have asked for, and wished them a happy anniversary.

Okay, so I was watching the DNC, and Michelle Obama absolutely killed it with her speech! It was about 20 minutes long, and the sweetest part was when she introduced Barack, calling him ‘the love of my life.’ Seriously, so touching! They shared a hug on stage, and Barack was right there giving his wife a huge shout-out to the crowd. It was a really beautiful moment – you could just feel the love between them.

Barack Obama jokingly told the audience he was energized, even though he knew following Michelle Obama’s speech was a tough act to follow.
