Did Amy Bradley fall? Did she jump? Was she pushed? Or could she be alive somewhere?
These queries about Amy’s disappearance remain unanswered, as it has been 27 years since she vanished during a Royal Caribbean cruise trip with her family.
On a seven-night cruise aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas, a 23-year-old woman named Iva Bradley, accompanied by her mother, father, and brother, disappeared during the fourth day of their vacation at sea.
Ron recalled waking up early on the morning of March 24, 1998, and going to look for his daughter.
He expressed, in the latest Netflix documentary titled “Amy Bradley Is Missing“, that he believed it wouldn’t take long to locate Amy, and once he did, everything would be fine.
But he never saw her again.
By the next day, the gripping mystery was international news.
Federal investigators arrived on site for an examination, as the Marine Corps, Navy, and assorted units from the Coast Guard collaborated in a puzzling mission that eventually unfolded.
According to John Mentar, then-Chief of Curaçao Harbor Police, if Amy had either disembarked from the ship or fallen off it, we would find a body. He’s familiar with these waters and believes that while there are sharks present, they wouldn’t have completely consumed her.
The mystery surrounding Amy’s disappearance and the speculation about her possible fate, which has captivated many for thirty years, is still not resolved. Amy Bradley Unsolved delves into the heart-wrenching aftermath of her vanishing and the intriguing theories that have kept people enthralled.
Each day, Iva relives the journey in her thoughts, as she expressed in the document. It’s not something she does sporadically or every other day, nor once a month. According to Ron, “It’s not just that she wakes up and goes to sleep with it on her mind, but everything around her seems to trigger memories of her.
Here is what to know about the case:
On March 23, 1998, Amy Bradley, who was then 23 years old, along with her family, enjoyed dinner on the Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. Subsequently, they attended a pool party, as stated by Amy’s mother Iva Bradley, father Ron Bradley, and brother Brad Bradley in Netflix’s documentary titled “Amy Bradley: A Case Unclosed”.
After Amy’s parents retired to their cabin, Amy and Brad ventured off to the ship’s disco around 1 a.m. According to the series, Brad was the one who departed first and made it back to the family’s cabin at 3:35 a.m. Just five minutes after that, he mentioned, Amy also arrived back at their room.
Brad said they talked for 30 minutes outside on the balcony before he went to bed.
At 5:30 a.m., Ron mentioned that he had woken up and noticed Amy’s legs on an outdoor lounge chair. At that moment, he remembered thinking to himself, “She seems to be alright.
Less than 30 minutes later, âSomething woke me up again,â Ron continued, and âshe wasnât there.â
Ron guessed that Amy might be sipping coffee or snapping photos â given she was preparing to join a photography competition post-trip, having recently moved into her new apartment â so he decided to search for her instead.
Brent Hunter, who serves as a Guest Relations Manager, noted in the Netflix series that it could be considered invasive or disruptive to wake all passengers at 7 a.m. via ship-wide broadcast. However, he mentioned that he would arrange for them to speak with a security officer, as promised to the family.
And much to the Bradleysâ dismay, the dayâs excursion into Curaçao was moving along as scheduled.
In the series, Iva remembered saying, “Could you please move the ship away from the dock, avoid lowering the gangways, halt all activities.
But they had an itinerary to keep, as remembered by ship cruise director Kirk Detweiler.
In the show, he remarked, “It was an unlucky event for one family,” but let’s not forget, there were around 2,400 individuals who had invested quite a bit. Regrettably, in essence, that’s the situation we find ourselves.
At 9 a.m., the team carried out a “Charlie drill,” as Detweiler mentioned in the series, with the purpose of thoroughly inspecting every nook and cranny of the 10-deck, 1,000-foot vessel.
Ron said that, after about an hour, the captain told them that Amy was definitely not on the ship.
According to Curaçao officials, they anticipated finding Amy’s body given the boat’s placement, the strength of the wind, the direction of the sea current, and the height of the waves.
In the series, Henry Vrutaal from the Curaçao Coast Guard stated that the search was the largest they had ever undertaken, spanning the region between the ship’s last stop in Aruba and Curaçao. However, despite their best efforts, there was no sign of the missing individual â not a single piece of clothing or any other trace.
Included in the statement was Harbor Police Chief Adtzere “John” Mentar, who said, “Should she have disembarked from the ship or fallen from it, we would recover the body.
FBI Agents Boarded the Rhapsody of the Seas on March 26, two days after Amy went missing. They found no signs of a struggle in the Bradley family’s cabin or on the balcony, as reported in “Amy Bradley Is Missing.
According to FBI Special Agent Victor McCollum, Amy’s sandals were tidily arranged side by side next to a small table positioned close to the balcony window outside. He added, “One might wonder if she jumped, but there’s no concrete proof supporting that theory.
According to FBI Special Agent Erin Sheridan, the cabin had been previously cleaned. If there were any traces of evidence, they wouldn’t have been preserved. Attempts to gather fingerprints and fibers from the bedding proved unsuccessful. Moreover, she speculated that perhaps the cleaning staff may have moved the table outside.
Sheridan emphasized that the one indisputable detail was the digital log from the key cards, which showed the exact times each family member accessed cabin No. 8564 that evening, with Amy entering at 3:40 a.m.
During our interviews with Ron, Iva, and Brad â both individually and together â we failed to uncover any evidence suggesting a family member could be the potential suspect.
Upon Amy’s return to the cabin, Brad recounted, she disclosed that she had been socializing and imbibing with the bass player, Alister Douglas, from the ship’s band. She further mentioned that he attempted an inappropriate physical advance towards her.
But Amy, Brad continued, âdidnât make a big deal of it, just kind of mentioned it in passing.â
He characterized his and Amyâs state that night as âtipsy,â but ânot crazyâ drunk.
In the series, McCollum stated that Douglas confessed to investigators that he had shown romantic interest towards Amy, however, he did not go beyond that.
The results of the voluntary lie detector test, as stated by the FBI agent, were “inconclusive,” yet Douglas firmly asserted that he had no involvement whatsoever in her disappearance.
In the thrilling series I’m hooked on, it was stated that they couldn’t verify the time of another passenger claiming to have seen Amy and Douglas before 6 a.m., the very morning she vanished. If there had been solid proof, I’d be right there with the local police force, but alas, we didn’t possess such evidence. Had there been, Douglas would’ve been apprehended without delay.
Alister was never arrested or charged in connection with Amyâs disappearance.
In the story titled “Amy Bradley Is Missing,” Amica Douglas expressed that her father’s response was simply strange whenever she mentioned Amy’s disappearance.
During a live-streamed phone conversation, Amica urged him to discuss the recent events openly.
âI donât want to go through this again,â Douglas told her. âI didnât do anything wrong.â
He stated on the call, “Anyone who was involved in tidying her room or serving her beverages, we were all punished. Once they understood there was no connection [to anything else], we resumed our tasks.
Reports of Amy being spotted have surfaced throughout the years, and the FBI’s investigation into these incidents continues to be ongoing.
David Carmichael recognized Amy from America’s Most Wanted and was completely convinced that he saw her on a beach in Curacao in August 1998. He stated this in the documentary. Amy approached him, as per Carmichael’s account, but then another man appeared, stared at Carmichael, and gestured for Amy to move away.
Carmichael mentioned that he often ponders the same thought: ‘Given an extra 10 seconds, what action would I have taken?’
Navy veteran Bill Hefner was in a bar in Curaçao in 1999 when a young woman named Amy Bradley approached him, claiming that she was being kept there against her will.
In the moment, he remained silent, but years later, upon seeing her on a magazine cover, Hefner acknowledged that he reached out to the FBI.
In 2005, an email containing a picture of a woman who looked like Amy Bradley was sent to her parents. The FBI had previously discovered this image on a site offering sex services in Venezuela and the Caribbean. A forensic expert analyzed the photo, as stated by Special Agent Sheridan in the series, and concluded that it could very well be Amy Bradley.
Judy Maurer recollected seeing Amy on Dr. Phil’s show and subsequently informed the FBI that she encountered Amy in a souvenir shop bathroom in Barbados during March 2005. In her account presented in the series, there was a woman at the sinks who appeared distressed and introduced herself as Amy. Additionally, Maurer recounted the presence of a man near the door, and she distinctly remembered mentioning to her spouse that “That girl seemed to be coerced into doing something.
Amy’s mom found the FBI’s photo analysis painful, but she also saw it as a possible indication of hope.
In the series, Iva, aged 71, expressed that none of them – neither she nor her father, nor her brother – ever imagined that she was absent. They’re all determined to find her.
47-year-old Brad expressed that they all sensed an intuitive belief that Amy might still be alive. Furthermore, he mentioned, “Not having a definitive answer, or being uncertain, keeps our hopes alive. In truth, I find this uncertainty to be more comforting.
