Video game publisher Nacon has entered insolvency proceedings. Trading of its shares on the Euronext Paris stock exchange has been temporarily halted, with the share price as of February 20th remaining in effect. The company states this was caused by its major shareholder, Bigben Interactive, being unable to repay part of its loan. This inability stemmed from an unexpected refusal of funding from Bigben’s banks, which has significantly impacted Bigben’s own business as well.
Nacon urgently needs to restructure its finances to stay in business. The company explored a court-supervised debt restructuring, but determined it doesn’t have enough assets to repay its debts quickly enough.
After filing for insolvency, Nacon is asking the courts to help it restructure its business. The company hopes this process will allow it to find ways to stay afloat and protect its employees and jobs, while also working with its creditors. A court hearing on this request is scheduled for early March.
Nacon owns several game development studios, such as Spiders, the team behind GreedFall: The Dying World, and Daedalic Entertainment, known for 2023’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Nacon has published a number of video games, but the company has faced challenges recently. Several of their games released in the past few years, including Gollum and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, weren’t well-received by players. However, they’ve also had successes, such as the 2024 release Ravenswatch.
Nacon officially formed in 2020 through a merger, but its roots go back to the 1980s. Recently, the company was involved in a legal dispute with the developers of the game The Sinking City, Frogwares. Over the past few years, Nacon has also expanded by acquiring several game development studios, such as Neopica, Midgar Studio, Ishtar Games, and Big Ant Studios.
We also have an interview with Julien Desourteaux, the creator and game director of Styx: Blades of Greed, where he discusses the game’s story, its rich background lore, how the gameplay has improved, and more.
