In DC Comics, the Green Lantern title is given to some of the most powerful heroes in the galaxy. Those chosen to wear a Green Lantern ring—individuals with incredible willpower—can create anything they envision using pure energy. The Green Lantern Corps, a peacekeeping force founded by ancient beings called the Guardians of the Universe, boasts thousands of alien members. Several Earth-based heroes have served as Green Lanterns, protecting their area of space from threats. Powered by their imaginations and capable of interstellar flight, Green Lanterns are at the heart of many imaginative and epic science fiction stories.

DC Comics features numerous incredible heroes who become Green Lanterns, such as Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Jo Mullien. Each hero adds their own distinct personality and story, making Green Lantern a rich and diverse part of the DC Universe. This collection highlights the best stories featuring Green Lantern and the characters who have wielded its power.

10) “War of the Green Lanterns”

When the villain Krona controls the minds of the Guardians of the Universe and most of the Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner must step up to save everyone – including their friends who have been turned against them. “War of the Green Lanterns” is a thrilling adventure that pushes Earth’s Green Lanterns to their absolute limits, both physically and mentally, as they fight off a massive army of mind-controlled Lanterns. Things get even more intense when each of the four heroes wields the power of different Lantern Corps to become even stronger. Overall, “War of the Green Lanterns” is an exciting story filled with fantastic action and compelling character moments.

9) “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize”

Even though it’s a short story, “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” is remarkably imaginative and stands out as one of the best Green Lantern adventures. It begins with the new Green Lantern, Arisia, asking Tomar-Re about the enigmatic Mogo, prompting Tomar to share an incredible story. Years ago, a fierce alien warrior named Bolphunga the Unrelenting arrived on a planet determined to fight Mogo, who was legendary as the universe’s greatest fighter. After weeks of searching, Bolphunga couldn’t find him. Frustrated, Bolphunga tried to force Mogo to reveal himself by detonating explosives all over the planet. But in a surprising twist, it’s revealed that Mogo isn’t on the planet – he is the planet itself. “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” is a funny and inventive story that greatly expanded the Green Lantern universe with its reveal of its largest member.

8) “Emerald Twilight”

The “Emerald Twilight” storyline is one of the most debated in DC Comics history, depicting Hal Jordan’s descent into madness and his transformation into a major cosmic threat. After the devastating loss of his hometown, Coast City, Hal desperately tries to rebuild his life. When the Guardians of the Universe refuse to assist him and even take away his Green Lantern ring, he breaks. Consumed by grief and a desire for power, Hal launches a solo attack on Oa, destroying the Green Lantern Corps and stealing their rings. Ultimately, he absorbs the Central Power Battery, becoming the terrifying villain known as Parallax. “Emerald Twilight” is a powerful and heartbreaking story about a hero’s downfall that fundamentally altered the Green Lantern mythos.

7) Far Sector

The Green Lanterns are essentially space law enforcement, and the story Far Sector really leans into that idea. It introduces Sojourn “Jo” Mullein, a new and popular Green Lantern, who is sent to the City Enduring, a space colony with over 20 billion residents. The colony is unusually peaceful because everyone there has had their emotions removed. But when someone is found murdered, Jo has to use her skills as a detective to solve the mystery and find the killer. Jo is a fantastic character, and Far Sector is a great way to meet her, while also delivering a compelling mystery that will keep you hooked.

6) “Hard-Traveling Heroes”

In the 1970s, DC Comics paired Green Arrow and Green Lantern in a groundbreaking series that addressed real-world problems in America. Green Arrow challenged Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, to confront issues like racism, drug abuse, and poverty that many people faced daily. The two heroes traveled the country, working to correct social and economic inequalities. Their contrasting personalities and powers created a strong, buddy-cop dynamic. This storyline not only breathed new life into both characters but also demonstrated comics’ potential to explore difficult topics with sensitivity and depth.

5) Earth One

This graphic novel offers a fresh, darker take on the Green Lantern story. It’s part of a series exploring alternate versions of DC Comics heroes. In this universe, Hal Jordan isn’t a test pilot, but a disillusioned space miner. After discovering a wrecked spacecraft and claiming the Green Lantern ring from the fallen Abin Sur, he’s thrust into a role he never expected. The Green Lantern Corps has been nearly destroyed by the Manhunters, emotionless androids. Now, Hal Jordan must become a beacon of hope and rebuild the Corps to fight for a better future in a bleak and unforgiving universe.

4) “Secret Origin”

The ‘New Earth’ reboot at DC Comics gave Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan a fresh start with the story ‘Secret Origin.’ This storyline delved deeper into Hal’s past, including the tragic loss of his father in an air force accident, which explained his daring, sometimes reckless, behavior. After receiving the Green Lantern ring from the dying Abin Sur, Hal was trained by Sinestro – before Sinestro became a villain. As Hal learned to control his powers, he battled dangerous enemies like Hector Hammond and Atrocitus. ‘Secret Origin’ successfully reintroduced Hal Jordan to readers and set the foundation for the modern Green Lantern mythology.

3) Rebirth

Following years of corruption, the destruction of the Green Lantern Corps, and his own death, Hal Jordan was brought back to life and restored to his former heroic status in the Rebirth storyline. Freed from his connection to the Spectre, Hal has to rebuild his life while also reconnecting with his role as a Green Lantern. Rebirth explores the journeys of other Lanterns – John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner – whose stories connect to the main plot. The story also reveals the original Parallax, the entity of fear that previously led to Hal’s downfall. Overall, Rebirth is a compelling and thoughtful story about Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps working to reclaim their position as the universe’s protectors.

2) Blackest Night

As a huge DC fan, I remember when Blackest Night hit – it was a massive event! Basically, this long-foretold prophecy about the Black Lantern Corps finally came true. Nekron, this incredibly powerful being who controls the undead, teams up with Black Hand to raise an army of zombie superheroes and villains. And it’s not just any army – they’re determined to wipe out all life! Seeing so many characters we thought were gone forever return as these terrifying Black Lanterns was seriously shocking. It forced all the different Lantern Corps – even those who usually fight each other – to unite and try to save the living. Honestly, Blackest Night was a really bold story, packed with both genuine scares and surprisingly emotional moments.

1) “Sinestro Corps War”

Sinestro, a former Green Lantern who fell from grace, has always been the Green Lantern Corps’ greatest enemy. In the story “Sinestro Corps War,” he finally gains the power to completely destroy them. He builds his own army – the Sinestro Corps – made up of the most terrifying beings in the universe. This new Corps is the opposite of the Green Lanterns and launches a massive war that will decide the fate of everything. “Sinestro Corps War” is a thrilling story where every Green Lantern struggles to survive. It also expands the history of Green Lantern comics by introducing the Emotional Spectrum of Light. All four Green Lanterns from Earth play a crucial role in this huge event, which solidifies Sinestro’s place as one of DC Comics’ most iconic villains.
