Marvel Studios generated a huge buzz online earlier this year with the first glimpses of their upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday. The four teaser trailers not only confirmed Chris Evans’ return as Captain America and an encounter between Ben Grimm and the people of Wakanda, but also showed what’s happening with Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, it seems Thor is facing his greatest challenge yet and is preparing for a final, epic battle that could mark his farewell.
Okay, so after that initial trailer, I genuinely thought Thor might be, well, done for good. But things seem to have shifted! Chris Hemsworth recently dropped some hints that he’ll be back for Avengers: Secret Wars, and even suggested he could reprise the role a “couple more times” – they apparently have plans for the character! Honestly, putting it all together, it’s pretty obvious where Marvel is going with this: they’re building towards the Thor Corps. I’m excited to see how they pull it off!
Avengers: Secret Wars Movie May Finally Bring the Thor Corps to the MCU

The next Avengers: Secret Wars movie, while named after a famous 1980s comic event, will actually be more inspired by the 2015 Secret Wars storyline. In that comic, Doctor Doom becomes a god-like ruler and rebuilds the entire multiverse into a single planet called Battleworld, made up of fragments of destroyed universes. To keep control, Doom uses enforcers, including a team of Thors from different realities who act as his personal police force.
Introducing the Thor Corps in Avengers: Secret Wars would create three unique opportunities for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First, it would allow audiences to see Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in a completely different way – as someone who is forced to obey others. While the first Thor movie showed him kneeling to his father, he still believed in his own importance and place in the universe, a confidence he’s held throughout several films. Being forced to serve under Doom would give Thor a new layer of complexity and a chance to prove himself again.
As a huge Marvel fan, one of the coolest things about a potential Secret Wars movie is the chance to see alternate versions of Thor we’d never get in the regular MCU. We’ve had a taste with Jane Foster as Thor and that quick glimpse of Throg in Loki, but the Secret Wars comics are packed with wild stuff – Storm wielding Mjolnir, a Thor who’s a lizard, a wolf Thor, even the whole Fantastic Four as Thors! And don’t forget Beta Ray Bill! Since the movie hasn’t even started filming yet, the possibilities are endless, and exploring all these unique Thors feels like a really exciting direction they could go in.
Avengers: Secret Wars Could Plant Seeds for Thor’s Future

A compelling addition the Thor Corps could bring to Avengers: Secret Wars is a glimpse into Thor’s future within the MCU. The comic books feature two other versions of Thor within the group that could set up future storylines. One is Ultimate Thor, who could serve as a completely new beginning for the MCU. The other is Unworthy Thor, who has lost the power to lift Mjolnir, and could be the basis for a future solo film.
A key Thor variant appearing in the crossover event is Old King Thor, a future version of the God of Thunder and a one-eyed ruler of Asgard. The upcoming Secret Wars film has a lot to address, including the MCU’s recent “soft reset.” Because of this, the film might introduce an older version of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor – either to hint at where future stories could go, or to foreshadow a difficult future that could impact the character moving forward.
Beyond Avengers: Secret Wars, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is uncertain for most characters. While some heroes will likely be played by new actors, and the introduction of the X-Men and Fantastic Four alongside the Avengers will be a major shift, Chris Hemsworth seems almost certain to continue playing Thor. Before that, Thor will face challenges in two upcoming Avengers films, which hopefully will set him on a positive course.
