2024’s Best Anime Film Gets New Look Ahead of a Special Release

Tatsuki Fujimoto is the creator of popular manga like Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch. Over the past ten years, he’s released several interesting stories, including a short work called Look Back. Released in 2021, Look Back was adapted into an anime film by Studio DURIAN and is considered by many to be the best anime film of 2024. The story was already popular with fans, but the anime adaptation made it even more well-known. A special sketchbook collection will be released on March 13, 2026, along with a signing event featuring the director, Kiyotaka Oshiyama.

A new collection of materials from the film’s production is coming soon, featuring previously unpublished sketches by the director and notes detailing how the movie was made. As reported by Comic Natalie, the cover art, created by Oshiyama, shows Ayumu Fujino, the film’s main character, working at his desk. To celebrate the release, the director will be signing copies of the book on March 16th and 17th at the Look Back art exhibition in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills Gallery. Attendees will need to make reservations beforehand.

What Is Look Back About?

Look Back tells the story of Ayumu Fujino, a talented high school artist who loves creating four-panel manga for her school newspaper. She’s used to receiving praise for her work, but everything changes when Kyomoto, a gifted but often absent student, starts contributing. Seeing Kyomoto’s impressive art and hearing her classmates criticize her own, Ayumu struggles with jealousy and finds it hard to accept that someone else is receiving more recognition.

She dedicated herself to learning how to make manga and becoming a better artist, and it was in sixth grade that she met Kyomoto. Though she was initially annoyed by Kyomoto, she couldn’t bring herself to dislike her, as it turned out Kyomoto was a fan of her work. They quickly became close friends and started collaborating on manga, prepared for whatever came next. The film explores themes of sadness, loss, and finding yourself, all told through the eyes of an artist.

Before becoming a global hit in 2024, including in North America, VIZ Media originally published the manga this film is based on. A live-action version has also been announced, but will only be available in Japan this year. The Blu-ray was released in Japan on January 21, 2026, with a limited first edition featuring original art by the director. The official anime website states there will be two Blu-ray versions, each with different prices and extras. You can currently watch the film on Prime Video.
