PlayStation Might Stop Releasing Single-Player Games on PC – Rumor

Sony has recently started releasing its single-player games on PC, but according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, they might stop doing so. He discussed this on the Triple Click podcast, but clarified that Sony still intends to release online, live-service games on PC to reach the largest possible player base.

So, from what I’m hearing, Sony’s really focusing on games that are constantly updated – the ‘live service’ type – for PC. But it sounds like they’re less interested in bringing their big, story-driven, single-player games to PC anymore. Jason Schreier pointed out that Marvel’s Wolverine, which is coming out on September 15th, is a perfect example – it’s PlayStation 5 exclusive, and there are no plans to release it on PC. It seems like they’re really keeping those kinds of experiences for console players only.

It’s likely this game won’t be released on PC, and even if it is, it’s expected you’ll need a PlayStation to play it for the foreseeable future.

When asked about rumors circulating on the ResetEra forums, Jason Schreier explained that he wasn’t quite ready to publish a full report on Sony’s decision to move away from releasing single-player games on multiple platforms. However, he added that more information will be shared soon.

We occasionally discuss potential story ideas on the show before I’ve finished reporting them. I’ll share more details when I’m ready.

I was really interested to hear John Linneman from Digital Foundry say something I’ve been thinking for a while now. They were talking in a recent Q&A about Sony’s PC game releases, and how Sony’s kind of dropped the ball a few times since the PS5 came out – they could have brought games like Demon’s Souls and Gran Turismo 7 to PC, but didn’t. Linneman actually thinks Sony is starting to move away from releasing games on PC altogether.

Currently, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is the only new, single-player PlayStation 5 game officially confirmed to also come out on PC. However, Kojima Productions isn’t owned by Sony like PlayStation Studios. So, whether or not Ghost of Tsushima (known as Ghost of Yōtei in some regions) will be released on PC will likely give us a better idea of Sony’s future plans for PC gaming.

The game company has had great success with its multiplayer game, Helldivers 2. They’re hoping to repeat that success with Horizon Hunters Gathering, a new co-op game revealed earlier this month. This game will be released simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 5, and players on both platforms will be able to play together and carry their progress across devices.

Although we don’t know when Horizon Hunters Gathering will be released, Guerrilla Games has confirmed they plan to return to developing single-player Horizon games. However, reports suggest that Horizon 3 is still several years away.
