What is The Spin?
‘The Spin’ is a heartwarming Irish film following Dermot (Brenock O’Connor) and Elvis (Owen Colgan), who run a small, old-fashioned record shop in Omagh. They specialize in vinyl records, but business is slow. They’re in trouble when their landlord, Sadie (Tara Lynne O’Neill), arrives demanding months of unpaid rent, giving them a difficult choice: pay up or lose the shop.
The Spin spins a tale…
Things turn around for Dermot when he discovers a farmer in Cork selling a valuable collection of Robert Johnson blues records for just £30 – a tiny fraction of their actual worth of £40,000. The rest of the film follows Dermot and his companion on a road trip in an old, unreliable car. Like many road movies, they encounter a series of funny mishaps along the way, meeting characters like a nun (Claire Malone) and a stripper (Kimberley Wyatt, a former Pussycat Doll who is proving to be a talented actress), and a potential love interest.
For Elvis and Dermot, it’s all about the financial reward. Elvis impulsively promised his daughter a pony, while Dermot is contemplating ending his relationship with Rose (Maura Higgins) and moving to the US to chase his dream of becoming a musician. But, like the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil, are they sacrificing their integrity for success?

The acting in The Spin is consistently fun, particularly the lively chemistry between O’Connor and Colgan – their quick-witted back-and-forth is often so fast you might miss a joke! It’s a charming film that doesn’t overstay its welcome, and director Michael Head (also an actor) does a great job getting excellent performances from his cast. This represents a welcome change of pace from his previous work in the gangster genre, making it definitely worth watching. Check it out!
