As a big sci-fi fan, I was surprised to hear that Season 2 of Starfleet Academy has already finished filming! The first season is currently on, and honestly, it’s getting a bit of a mixed reaction. It seems like they’re really trying to balance storylines that appeal to longtime fans with a more modern style geared towards younger viewers. Everyone’s arguing about how many people are watching, but what Paramount really cares about is who is watching. They’re hoping to attract a new generation of fans, and only they know if the show is actually succeeding in doing that.
It’s clear Paramount executives were pleased with Starfleet Academy. Season one filmed from August 2024 to February 2025, and season two from August 2025 to February 2026. This consistent filming schedule suggests a third season is likely. However, if a third season is made, significant changes are probably planned.
Starfleet Season 1 Just Set Up Major Changes for Season 3
In Season 1, Episode 8 of Starfleet Academy, Mary Wiseman returns as Sylvia Tilly, a fan favorite from Discovery. The episode is particularly strong, revisiting a difficult storyline from Voyager, but with a surprising twist: Tilly has developed a passion for theater. During her theatrical debut, she reveals why she’s not a permanent member of the Starfleet Academy cast – she’s currently on assignment, working with third-year cadets on an off-world rotation.
This discovery is significant. It shows that only first and second-year students learn at the Academy’s main campus, the starship Athena, which is stationed in San Francisco. Third-year students, however, train off-world, likely to prepare them for the challenges of working in more hazardous locations and to help them adjust to life in space. This is a logical approach to their education.
However, this development means Season 3 of Starfleet Academy will be quite different from the first two seasons. Chancellor Ake will probably appear less frequently, as the cadets will be spending more time off-planet and away from her supervision. We can expect the same for other important characters like Jett Reno and Lura Thok. But don’t automatically assume they’ll be working with Tilly – she’s currently rotating assignments, so another character might be assigned to the team instead.
Creating the Starfleet Academy episodes was reportedly very expensive, possibly around $10 million each. However, the show saved money by reusing sets from the Athena storyline. This won’t be possible as much in Season 3, which will significantly increase the production costs. Because of this, a third season of Starfleet Academy isn’t guaranteed, and we’ll have to wait to see if it gets made.
