Animation revivals are currently very popular, with shows like King of the Hill, Phineas and Ferb, and The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball attracting both longtime fans and new audiences. Anime is following this trend, bringing back some of its classic series. In a surprising move, the anime Gate – which combines military technology with fantasy elements inspired by shows like Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings – is getting a second season after a ten-year hiatus. If you’ve been waiting for more Gate, you’re in luck!
The anime series Gate first aired in 2015 and concluded its initial season in 2016. Although the source material – including novels, light novels, and a continuing manga – offered plenty of content, most fans didn’t expect a second season. However, it was announced last year that Gate would return in 2027. A new trailer has now been released to generate excitement for the show’s comeback, focusing on the character Yoji Itami and his battle against the creatures threatening our world. Gate’s Second Season Build-Up
The first season of the series was animated by A-1 Pictures, the studio behind popular anime like Solo Leveling and Sword Art Online. However, for the second season, Studio M2 will be taking over animation duties. M2 is well-known for its work on Netflix’s Pluto, a critically acclaimed adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s manga. They’ve also contributed to several other anime, including Blue Lock, Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc, Sanda, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, and Lazarus.
The second season of Gate, titled Gate 2, picks up years after a portal to another world opened in Tokyo. Japan still tightly controls the Gate, and when an American journalist is kidnapped in the Special Region, Petty Officer Hajime Tokushima and Captain Goro Edajima are sent on a mission. They travel aboard the submarine Kitashio to infiltrate Tinae, a powerful trading nation. Along the way, they team up with a determined princess, a pirate heir, and a mystical guardian. Together, they’ll face dangerous waters filled with battling fleets, colossal armored whales, and unbelievable creatures. Although a third season isn’t confirmed yet, there’s plenty of source material in the novels and manga to suggest a promising future for this anime, which many fans believed would never return.
