Fresh off their successful bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount has more news: they’re planning a future for G.I. Joe in theaters. While Paramount has owned the rights to the popular toy line for years, they haven’t been able to launch a consistent movie franchise. The 2009 film, The Rise of Cobra, and its 2013 sequel, Retaliation, earned a combined $675 million worldwide, but the 2021 reboot, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, wasn’t successful, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Max Landis will be writing a new G.I. Joe movie, marking a potential comeback for the once-promising talent. Landis gained attention early in his career after writing the 2012 hit Chronicle, but his career stalled in 2019 when The Daily Beast published a detailed report containing sexual assault allegations from eight women. Since then, he’s primarily been creating content for his YouTube channel.
Dueling GI Joe Reboots Being Written (Including By a Shocking Writer)

Max Landis’s return to Hollywood with a potential reboot of a major franchise is just the beginning of a strange story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio isn’t only developing a G.I. Joe script from Landis – they’ve also hired Danny McBride to write a separate G.I. Joe revival. While McBride is well-known as an actor, particularly for playing Kenny Powers, he’s also a successful writer, with credits including The Righteous Gemstones, Vice Principals, and Eastbound & Down. He also wrote the 2018 Halloween and its sequels, among other projects.
If you were hoping the unusual direction of the new G.I. Joe movie would calm down, think again. It’s getting even stranger. Paramount reportedly plans to combine two completely different scripts into a single film. While it’s common for studios to develop multiple scripts for big franchises, intentionally commissioning two separate versions with the goal of merging them is a very unusual—and almost unheard of—strategy in Hollywood.
It’s unclear how the new G.I. Joe movie will connect to past films. While the previous three movies had some continuity, Paramount’s new ownership likely wants a fresh start for the franchise. This probably means the planned crossover with Transformers, hinted at in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, won’t happen. Though this isn’t officially confirmed, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is involved with both franchises, leaving the door open for anything.
