5 Best Alien Games, Ranked

The Alien series has inspired many excellent video games, though most of the best ones fall within the Aliens vs. Predator franchise. This list focuses on the top five Alien games, excluding those that pit Aliens against Predators and instead highlighting titles centered solely around the terrifying Xenomorph. We reviewed games based on the creature from Ridley Scott’s 1979 film and ranked the top five based on how well they were received by critics, how popular they became, and their sales figures.

5) Aliens: Infestation

Released in 2011 exclusively for the Nintendo DS, Aliens: Infestation is a Metroidvania-style game where you hunt for gear, weapons, and upgrades while battling Xenomorphs. Players control one of four Marines across locations like LV-426, the moon Phobos, and the ship Sulaco, investigating the Xenomorphs’ growth. The game features permadeath – if all four Marines fall, the game is over. It’s a thrilling and enjoyable take on the classic Alien universe, reminiscent of older Alien and Metroidvania games.

4) Alien 3

Though not a fan favorite, Alien 3 actually inspired a surprisingly enjoyable video game released on nearly every gaming platform of the time. The game lets players control Ellen Ripley as she battles through the Fiorina 161 prison, and it arms her with a wider variety of weapons than she had in the film. While the game received generally positive feedback across all systems, the Super Nintendo version stood out with its improved sound, graphics, and music. It’s a creative adaptation of a weaker movie, demonstrating the strength of the Alien franchise in the world of video games.

3) Aliens Online

Released in 1998, Aliens Online was an online multiplayer game based on the popular Alien movies. Players could team up and battle the Xenomorphs, each taking on different roles with unique skills. Or, they could play as the Aliens themselves, adding variety to the first-person shooter experience. While fans of the Alien franchise appreciated the game’s look and feel, it had some problems with level design and wasn’t always balanced well. Despite these issues, it was generally an enjoyable online game. Unfortunately, Aliens Online didn’t stay online for long. In 2000, Electronic Arts bought GameStorm, the company hosting the game for a monthly subscription, and the servers were shut down.

2) Alien Trilogy

As a huge Alien fan, I remember being really excited for Alien Trilogy when it came out. It’s a first-person shooter that basically lets you play through the first three movies, and they even used motion capture to make the characters look good! What I loved most was how well it captured the creepy, tense atmosphere of the films – it was seriously unsettling. There are 30 levels to fight through, plus some tough bosses, and they throw a ton of different Xenomorphs at you, so it’s always challenging. It came out on a lot of consoles, but the best part for me was the multiplayer deathmatch on the DOS version – that really made it special.

1) Alien: Isolation

If you’re familiar with video games based on the Alien franchise, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to see Alien: Isolation at the top of any list. This game truly captured the terrifying atmosphere of the original Alien movie, focusing on suspense and survival rather than action. It’s the kind of Alien game fans had always wanted – a genuinely scary survival horror experience. The story takes place 15 years after the first film, following Amanda Ripley as she searches for her mother. But, of course, a Xenomorph shows up, and the game quickly becomes a desperate struggle to avoid it. Alien: Isolation has received several updates and expansions since its release, and its popularity paved the way for potential sequels.
