A long-held secret about one of Green Lantern‘s classic foes has been revealed, and it will significantly impact their future. I’ve always enjoyed the villains in the Green Lantern stories within the DC Universe. Beyond interesting Earth-based enemies like Hector Hammond, the Green Lanterns face a wide range of villains, many of whom are linked to the Emotional Spectrum. Characters like Atrocitus, Larfleeze, and Sinestro are just a few of the colorful threats the Green Lanterns have battled over time.
You know, when we talk about Green Lanternās rogues gallery, everyone focuses on Sinestro, but I think we often overlook Carol Ferris, aka Star Sapphire. And honestly, since Geoff Johns revamped the character, the various Star Sapphires haven’t really been ‘villains’ in the traditional sense ā though their approaches were always a little⦠unorthodox. Now, Carol is the last remaining Star Sapphire, and sheās really come into her own, fighting alongside the Justice League Unlimited and proving she’s a force to be reckoned with. But the really interesting part? She’s uncovering secrets about the Star Sapphireās past that are changing everything she thought she knew.
Star Sapphireās Power is Way More Complicated Than We Thought

In the latest issue of Green Lantern, Star Sapphire and Dove travel to Paris after receiving what seems like a distress call. It’s actually a surprise planned by Hal Jordan to spend quality time with Carol. He’s arranged for them to have a free evening, hoping to propose. However, instead of a proposal, the couple simply enjoys a much-needed night together, their first in months.
Even on Valentine’s Day, trouble finds a way to strike. The villain Cupid has stolen a valuable relic from the SacrĆ©-CÅur, escaping with an explosion that Hal and Carol notice. They pursue Cupid, and discover sheās ruined Green Lanternās romantic proposal, sending Star Sapphire into a rage. They manage to capture Cupid and recover the stolen cross. However, a strange event occurs ā the crossās jewel detaches and attaches itself to Carolās ring, accompanied by an eerie voice.
Carol learns that the Star Sapphire power she uses is only a piece of something much larger. Ages ago, the original Star Sapphire was broken into eight different expressions of love: Mania, eros, philia, storge, ludus, pragma, philautia, and agape. Carol and the other Star Sapphires have been using the Mania aspect for years, and sheās just discovered the agape aspect. However, six more aspects of love are still out there, and Carol needs to find them all to unlock the Star Sapphireās full potential and restore love throughout the DC Universe.
Star Sapphireās Villain Era Was All Because She Didnāt Possess Her Full Power

As a longtime Green Lantern fan, I remember Star Sapphire being portrayed as a villain for years. It all stemmed from the Star Sapphire gem itself ā it basically drove people crazy with obsessive love! We always thought the Violet Light, representing love, was just a really powerful and unpredictable force in the emotional spectrum. But lately, Iāve learned thereās a lot more to the story than we initially believed. Itās much more complicated than just a simple, unstable power source.
The original source of all creation split into the Emotional Spectrum, and even love itself broke apart into eight different forms. The Zamarons discovered the most volatile of these forms and used it to build their army. However, there are actually seven other types of love that, when combined, create a much stronger version of the Star Sapphire. Carol recently found agape, a divine love connecting humans and gods. There are six more aspects of love still undiscovered, and Carol needs to find them to reach her full power.
It’s surprising to realize Carol became a villain simply because of a very intense kind of love. Even more interesting is the possibility that Star Sapphire could become incredibly powerful by discovering other forms of love. No one knows where these other aspects of love are hidden, or just how much stronger they’ll make her. But this reveal is fantastic ā it completely changes how we understand Star Sapphire and opens the door to a really exciting future for the character.
