Capcom wanted to make Resident Evil Requiem truly scary, so the voice actors needed to convincingly portray their characters’ fear and reactions to the unsettling events. Angela Sant’Albano, who voices Grace Ashcroft, recently discussed her experience with PCGamesN, detailing how she prepared for the role and captured the necessary level of fear.
Sant’Albano reports that Capcom expressed a desire to return to the roots of the original, horror-focused Resident Evil games. Interestingly, Sant’Albano herself wasn’t very familiar with the Resident Evil series beforehand, so she had to catch up by watching gameplay footage of the older titles.
She explained that she studied a lot of gameplay footage because Capcom kept emphasizing their desire to return to the roots of the scary Resident Evil games. As someone new to the horror genre, she was determined to capture that feeling and create a slow, unsettling atmosphere, which she felt was essential for the game.
To heighten the horror experience, Sant’Albano shared that Capcom planned to use visual effects during filming, such as dimming the studio lights and using flashlights.
To create a realistic atmosphere, we’d turn off all the studio lights and only use flashlights or head-mounted camera lights. Capcom was really good at capturing the feeling of the game without actually having someone running at you as a zombie. They also showed the actors pictures of the gruesome creatures and injuries their characters would encounter – things like a particularly nasty, open sore on the left hand.
I’m pretty new to voice acting in horror games, so Nick Apostolides – who voices Leon S. Kennedy – was a huge help. He’s not only played Leon for ages, but he’s a big fan of the whole series, which meant he could fill me in on a lot of the background and details I was missing. Seriously, I couldn’t have done it without his guidance!
I immediately hit it off with Nick – he’s just a wonderful guy, and we quickly became friends. Honestly, even with all the preparation I did, so many unexpected things came up! Luckily, he’s been with the series for ages and is a huge gamer himself, so he was amazing at filling in the gaps in my knowledge and getting me up to speed.
