After a nine-year wait, Zootopia 2 finally premiered in theaters in November 2025, following the huge success of the original Zootopia in November 2016. The sequel builds on the first film, bringing back beloved characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, and introducing new faces like Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan. Despite competition from other major releases like Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2 exceeded expectations and became a massive hit. Disney is now hoping the film will perform equally well on streaming, where it will be available later this month.
In addition to receiving widespread critical praise, Zootopia 2 was a massive commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films ever made. It had the fourth-best opening weekend of the year and remained popular in theaters for months. As of its release, the film has earned $1.85 billion worldwide, making it the top-grossing movie of the year. This impressive total also puts Zootopia 2 among the all-time greats, ranking as the ninth-highest-grossing film in history – surpassing 2024’s Inside Out 2 and falling just behind 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Disney Pixar
After a successful theatrical run and winning a BAFTA for Best Animated Feature (with impressive scores of 96% from audiences and 91% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes), Disney has announced that Zootopia 2 will be available to stream on Disney+ worldwide starting March 11th. The film is also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture, where it will compete against Arco, Elio, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, and KPop Demon Hunters.
The new Zootopia movie is doing very well in theaters, following the huge success of the first film in 2016, which earned over $1 billion worldwide. That original movie was just behind other billion-dollar hits like Captain America: Civil War, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Finding Dory. With the two Zootopia films already bringing in almost $3 billion for Disney, it’s likely the studio will consider making a third movie to complete a trilogy.
Byron Howard, director of the first two Zootopia movies, says Disney is aiming to make Zootopia 3 much faster than the nine years it took to produce the second film. Jared Bush, Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer, explained that animated movies typically take four to five years to create, with the first two or three years dedicated to brainstorming ideas. He confirmed that Disney is currently in that early creative stage for the third Zootopia movie.
The team behind Zootopia is currently developing ideas for a potential third movie, and they’re hoping to include Keanu Reeves if it comes together. In the meantime, Disney Animation is celebrating the huge success of the film and looking forward to seeing how well it performs on Disney+.
