
Crunchyroll is doing really well right now, boosted by the growing worldwide popularity of anime. It has a huge library of classic shows and is also making its own original content, giving it a lot to be proud of. However, some Crunchyroll subscribers aren’t going to be happy about a recent change. This change was announced a while ago, and it’s now in effect. We’re here to explain what’s different on Crunchyroll and how it affects both longtime and new users.
Crunchyroll has updated its subscription prices, effective today, March 4th. The “Fan” tier now costs $9.99 per month, up from $7.99. The “Mega Fan” tier has increased to $13.99 per month from $11.99, and the “Ultimate Fan” tier is now $17.99 per month, previously $15.99. While the “Fan” tier hadn’t seen a price change since 2019, both the “Mega Fan” and “Ultimate Fan” tiers had increases earlier in 2024.
Explaining The Crunchyroll Tiers

Along with the update, Crunchyroll detailed its subscription options. The basic Fan Tier provides ad-free access to the entire Crunchyroll library, lets you download shows to one device for offline viewing, and offers a 5% discount on select merchandise (available in the US, Canada, and some European countries). The Mega Fan Tier still includes full library access, but adds the ability to stream on up to four devices simultaneously, access to the Crunchyroll Game Vault, offline HD downloads, and a 10% discount on select products with free shipping within the U.S.
The highest subscription level, called the “Ultimate Fan Tier,” gives you access to Crunchyroll’s entire anime and manga library. Subscribers can watch on up to six devices, enjoy a 15% discount on certain merchandise, and receive a special gift package after a year of continuous membership. Crunchyroll used to offer a free plan, but it was discontinued as anime became more popular.
Anime has become incredibly popular recently, leading to intense competition between streaming services. The COVID-19 pandemic played a big role in this, as people stuck at home discovered and fell in love with anime. Even after the pandemic, interest remained high. While Crunchyroll was already a major player, services like HBO Max, Hulu, and Netflix are now also investing heavily in anime content to capture this growing audience.
