Jake Gyllenhaal recently shared a sweet moment with his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal. She left him a heartfelt note while he was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 3rd, giving fans a peek into their close relationship.

Maggie, 48, left a short note – just the words “You’re a beast” – hidden in her seat cushion during a recent talk show appearance. This prompted Jake, 45, to explain what the message really meant.

He shared that his sister performed in a Broadway show. He described it as a wonderful but challenging time for her. Before one of the preview performances, he went to her dressing room and wrote her a note saying, ‘You’re a beast,’ to encourage her.

Ever since, the brother and sister have been writing the phrase on each other’s mirrors as a way to encourage one another during important times in their careers. Jake, who appears in Maggie’s new film The Bride! with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, believes the phrase might even be related to the themes of his sister’s movie.

He explained that the movie seems to explore this idea, but also how we all connect by sharing experiences – whether it’s here, at a concert, or in a movie theater – and feeling a sense of togetherness.

The actor, who was nominated for an Oscar, jokingly added, “She also asked me to mention that she forgot to tell everyone last night.”

Maggie and her partner have always been there for each other, but she recently mentioned their connection has become even closer recently.

She explained on the February 28th episode of The New York Times’ podcast, The Interview, that while they’ve never been distant, they’re now closer than ever before.
