The Best Jurassic Movie in Almost 30 Years Is a #1 Hit on Both Netflix & HBO Max at the Exact Same Time

While the first Jurassic Park movie was a huge critical success, the rest of the franchise hasn’t always impressed reviewers. However, the Jurassic Park films consistently perform well at the box office. For more than 30 years, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most dependable franchises, with last year’s Jurassic World Rebirth continuing that trend. Although Rebirth didn’t reach the $1 billion mark like the earlier Jurassic World films, it still grossed $869.1 million worldwide – enough to rank sixth at the global box office for the year. The series clearly delivers the kind of big-screen excitement that audiences want to see in theaters, and Rebirth has also proven to be a popular choice for home viewing.

Surprisingly, Jurassic World Rebirth is currently the most popular movie on both HBO Max and Netflix. FlixPatrol reports it’s No. 1 worldwide on HBO Max, ahead of titles like Sisu: Road to Revenge and The Mummy Returns. On Netflix, Rebirth topped the global charts for the week of February 23rd to March 1st, with a strong 5.6 million views over 12.4 million hours of watch time. Currently, Rebirth is only streaming on HBO Max in certain countries, while all four Jurassic World films are available on Netflix in the U.S.

Why Jurassic World Rebirth Is a Major Hit on Streaming

The strong streaming numbers for Jurassic World Rebirth are notable because it was recently added to Netflix, becoming available on February 28th. This means it quickly gained a large audience in a short amount of time. It’s likely Rebirth will stay in Netflix’s top 10 for several more weeks as more people watch it. It will also be interesting to see if other Jurassic World movies join it on the chart in the coming weeks. The first three Jurassic World films weren’t added until March, so they haven’t had as much time to gain viewers.

Similar to other Jurassic films, Rebirth received a mixed reception (scoring 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), but many consider it a standout entry in the series. After the increasingly complex storylines of the first Jurassic World trilogy – involving human clones and crop-destroying insects – director Gareth Edwards steered Rebirth back to basics with a simpler story: a group venturing to a dinosaur-filled island on a crucial mission. Edwards aimed for a classic, exciting adventure, and he largely achieved it. Jurassic World Rebirth features several truly thrilling scenes with impressive visual effects. Edwards is known for his ability to showcase grand scale on screen, making him an ideal director for dinosaur-filled action sequences.

As a huge fan of the Jurassic Park movies, I went into Rebirth knowing it was aiming for a fresh start with a brand new cast – Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey lead the way. Let’s be real, no new group will ever quite measure up to the iconic Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern, but this cast is seriously talented. The script isn’t quite as strong as some of Johansson and Ali’s best work, but they really bring their characters to life and have great chemistry together, which helps make the story more engaging. And Jonathan Bailey? He’s a fantastic addition as a paleontologist – his genuine excitement about dinosaurs and seeing them come to life actually helps Rebirth recapture some of that original Jurassic Park magic and sense of wonder.

If you’re browsing Netflix for something new to watch this month, Jurassic World: Rebirth is worth checking out. It’s an enjoyable action movie that doesn’t require a lot of focus – perfect for having on in the background. While rumors suggest a fifth Jurassic World film is being considered, with the cast of Rebirth potentially returning, nothing is official yet. Universal Pictures is likely keen to continue the franchise, but they’ll probably want to develop a compelling story before moving forward.
