Control Resonant’s Combat is All About Aggression, Remedy Details Forms and Abilities

Control Resonant revisits the blend of gunplay and telekinetic abilities from the original Control, but with a noticeably different approach and feel. Players take on the role of Dylan Faden, Jesse’s brother, and are actively encouraged to engage enemies directly and aggressively. According to Remedy’s Miika Huttunen, this is because being aggressive is what powers up your abilities.

Using your melee weapon, the Aberrant, in combat refills your special abilities, which can stun opponents. You can then finish them off for extra damage, but this effect doesn’t last forever – and the process repeats. The Aberrant has two forms with different skills, such as launching enemies into the air after dodging. You can also unlock special moves called Combo Enders to deal even more damage.

If you’re interested in customizing your gameplay, Remedy offers plenty of options. You could focus on powerful, up-close combat, or take a more strategic approach using summons like Mold Turrets – these attack on their own and can weaken enemies. As an action RPG, the game also features detailed stats that clearly show how effective your character build is.

You earn new Abilities by defeating the strong bosses, called Resonants, found in Manhattan. One example is Seekers, which summons a powerful, growing telekinetic creature to fight for you. You can also directly launch it at enemies for a lot of damage.

Players can further personalize their experience by entering the Gap, a surreal realm connected to Dylan’s mind, using the DualSense controller. They can also unlock Talents to enhance how well abilities work together with melee attacks.

Huttunen points out there are other elements at work beyond what’s immediately obvious. The game is structured so you can’t unlock everything in a single playthrough, encouraging replayability and letting you customize your character’s development. This design also suggests the possibility of a New Game Plus feature, where you can start again with your progress carried over.

Control Resonant will be released later this year on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. You can watch a detailed gameplay demonstration from the recent State of Play event.
