Prime Video’s 8-Episode Franchise Revival Show Is Finally Here (And It’s Already Breaking Records)

While Netflix and HBO Max often dominate the conversation about original shows, Prime Video is rapidly becoming a major competitor. Amazon’s streaming service consistently delivers high-quality shows and has a talent for bringing back popular franchises – think the Fallout TV series, the upcoming Stargate reboot, and Blade Runner 2099. Their newest revival just launched and became an instant hit, breaking records even before the full season was available.

All eight episodes of Guy Ritchie’s new show, Young Sherlock, are now available on Prime Video, having premiered on March 4th. Ritchie, who also directed the Sherlock Holmes films from 2009 and 2011, brings an origin story to life, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes solving a murder mystery while at Oxford University in the 1870s. The show is off to a strong start – its February trailer garnered 223 million views in just one week, becoming Prime Video’s most popular trailer ever in that period, according to Deadline.

Prime Video’s Young Sherlock Is the Sherlock Holmes Origin Story We Need

While it’s too soon to know if Young Sherlock will maintain its strong viewership, critics are already praising the series. It currently has an 86% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is higher than both of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. – those films received scores of 70% and 60%, respectively. Simon Gallagher of ComicBook gave the show a 4 out of 5, calling it a refreshing and welcome addition to the Sherlock Holmes world.

This series skillfully blends Guy Ritchie’s signature fast-paced style with a heartfelt coming-of-age story, offering a fresh perspective. It excels at delving into Sherlock’s character, showing his vulnerabilities, early struggles, and the lessons that shaped him before he became the famous detective we know. We also see the fascinating and complicated development of the relationship between Sherlock and Moriarty, before they became rivals. With strong performances from Tiffin and Dónal Finn, quick-witted dialogue, an exciting plot, a fantastic rock soundtrack, and creative visuals representing Sherlock’s thought process, Young Sherlock is highly addictive and will leave you wanting more.

Will There Be a Young Sherlock This Season 2?

Whether there will be another season is still uncertain. While the first season appears to have hinted at a continuation, Prime Video hasn’t officially announced a second season yet. This will likely depend on how many people watched and how well critics liked the first season. Considering the show, Young Sherlock, has already been a big hit and received positive reviews, a renewal seems possible, but fans will probably need to wait a few weeks to find out for sure.
