Laterns Reveals Best Look Yet at DCU Green Lantern Rings in First Trailer Teaser

Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next phase of the DC Universe. Following the positive reception to last summer’s Superman movie, which proved audiences were ready for a fresh take on the character, and the buzz surrounding Peacemaker Season 2, which hinted at future projects, the DCU is poised to become a strong competitor to Marvel’s MCU. With a big 2026 planned, James Gunn has promised a sneak peek at what’s coming very soon.

HBO Max and James Gunn announced today that the first trailer for the new Green Lantern TV series, Lanterns, will be released tomorrow. Along with the announcement, they shared a sneak peek – and the best look yet – at the Green Lantern rings featured in the DC Universe. Gunn also hinted at which comic books inspired the show. You can see the teaser below.

HBO’s Lanterns Trailer Coming Tomorrow, Expanding the DCU

A Green Lantern appeared briefly in the Superman movie (played by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and expected to return in Lanterns), but viewers didn’t get a clear view of his power ring. Now, we have a detailed look at the ring’s design. It keeps the classic Green Lantern symbol, but features more intricate details than seen in the comics or the 2011 Ryan Reynolds film. Notably, the ring has a unique central feature that seems to be where the energy constructs originate – a new addition for the DC Universe.

James Gunn hinted at the upcoming “Lanterns” series with a new post, even though it wasn’t directly about the show’s trailer. He wrote, “Their legacies continue,” and shared images of classic comic book covers featuring Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). While Gunn didn’t confirm these comics inspired the series, the titles might offer some hints about what to expect.

One standout issue is Green Lantern #87, where John Stewart is first introduced. This comic isn’t just about Stewart joining the Green Lantern Corps—it also features a brief appearance by Guy Gardner. The story likely served as a starting point for the series, as it focuses on Hal Jordan training Stewart and the friction between their personalities.

The artwork includes a cover from Green Lantern #1 by Alex Ross, which is a clear inspiration for the show and its role in the DC Universe. This comic marked the beginning of Geoff Johns’ famous run on the character, following the events of Green Lantern Rebirth. Johns reimagined Green Lantern’s history and introduced the idea of emotional energy powering different rings and groups, leading to big stories like Blackest Night and Brightest Day. While it’s still unknown what DCU plans for Green Lantern, an HBO series could easily set up a storyline of that scale. We’ll learn more when the show premieres later this year.
