Recasting Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday would force Marvel to finally tell the complete story of Steve Rogers that it avoided during the Infinity Saga. Avengers: Endgame resonated so strongly with audiences because it genuinely felt like the conclusion of a long and carefully built chapter in the MCU. While the Infinity Saga wasn’t flawless, Kevin Feige and his team successfully crafted a continuous storyline over eleven years, allowing the Russo brothers to deliver a satisfying conclusion that paid off years of groundwork.
One of the most satisfying parts of Avengers: Endgame for me was how they handled Steve Rogers’ story. After losing Tony Stark, Cap had one last job: return the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines. But the movie threw a beautiful curveball – Steve didn’t just come back! He actually lived a full life with Peggy Carter in the past. Honestly, after everything he sacrificed and all the years he spent serving others, it felt like the perfect, well-deserved ending for him.
Avengers: Doomsday Will Finally Show Steve Rogers’ Life With Peggy Carter

Ending Steve Rogers’ story with a happy ending felt right for his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, fans have always been curious about the specifics of his second trip through time, as some details remained unclear. Old Steve’s decision not to tell Sam Wilson about it in Avengers: Endgame only made that curiosity stronger.
It once seemed unlikely that Marvel Studios would explore what happened to Steve Rogers after the Infinity Saga. Chris Evans’ time as Captain America appeared to be over, and the early stages of the Multiverse Saga were introducing new heroes. However, things changed when details about Avengers: Doomsday began to surface. Evans’ confirmed return means we’ll finally see Steve living a peaceful life with Peggy Carter. The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows the retired Captain America enjoying a quiet, domestic life with Peggy, and the two are now raising a son together.
The recent clip from Avengers: Doomsday offers the most we’ve seen of Steve Rogers’ relationship with Peggy Carter, but many details about this period of his life remain a mystery. The upcoming movie, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, will likely explore this further, especially considering their son is thought to play a key role in Doctor Doom’s plans. While it’s a dangerous time for Rogers and his family – facing a threat from Robert Downey Jr.’s villain – it provides a strong reason for Chris Evans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a captivating storyline.
Honestly, I think seeing this story unfold now is so much more impactful than if Old Steve Rogers had just explained it all in a scene during Avengers: Endgame. When Sam and Bucky found him back in the present after his last mission, the movie was practically over! Even if he wanted to share everything, there just wouldn’t have been enough time to really do it justice. It feels much better to see it explored now, with the space to breathe and really understand what happened.
Avengers: Doomsday Can Fully Complete Steve Rogers’ MCU Story

It’s hard to know if Marvel Studios deliberately kept Steve Rogers’ life after Avengers: Endgame a secret. When the Infinity Saga concluded in 2019, it appeared Chris Evans had finished with the role and the story was moving forward with the Multiverse Saga. Unlike Tony Stark’s clear and final ending, Rogers’ conclusion left room for future stories, making it easy to revisit his character later on.
Marvel Studios could have easily ended Captain America’s story with a simple ‘happily ever after,’ but fans would always wonder about the details. Beyond his peaceful life with Peggy Carter, there are questions about what happened when the Infinity Stones were returned. Specifically, bringing the Soul Stone back to Vormir would have meant another encounter with the Red Skull, the villain from Captain America: The First Avenger.
With so much going on in Avengers: Doomsday, the directors, the Russos, need to be concise if they plan to resolve the remaining questions surrounding Captain Rogers. This will probably be their last chance, as repeatedly bringing back Chris Evans could draw criticism for the Marvel Cinematic Universe relying too heavily on its original heroes instead of focusing on new ones. However, given how significant the character has been to their careers, there’s hope they’ll make his return meaningful.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
