Even though the original The Walking Dead series has ended, the story isn’t over. Two new shows, The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, are currently airing and continuing the franchise. With one show set in New York and the other following Daryl’s adventures in Europe, the series is exploring new locations and expanding its post-apocalyptic world. While the future of these shows and potential new spinoffs is uncertain, fans are excited about a recent preview they’ve been anticipating for years.
In a recent interview on The Brandon Davis Show, Greg Nicotero, an executive producer and special effects master for The Walking Dead, shared that the show’s future is still being planned. This includes a possible series bringing back popular characters like Rick and Daryl, who haven’t appeared together in years. Nicotero mentioned they’ve been discussing a reunion show featuring many beloved characters for a couple of years now.
The Walking Dead Reunion Series Is Still in the Cards
Throughout ten seasons of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) and Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) shared the screen in over a hundred episodes and became a beloved duo among fans. However, their characters were separated during Season 9. The last time Lincoln and Reedus appeared together was in the November 4, 2018, episode “What Comes After,” which many viewers believed was Lincoln’s final appearance on the show – that episode aired almost a decade ago.
Since then, Andrew Lincoln reprised his role as Rick in the miniseries The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, and Norman Reedus is gearing up for the fourth season of his own show. Despite all this, Daryl Dixon hasn’t yet reunited with Rick, even after years of searching for him. Greg Nicotero hinted that a reunion could happen, pointing to how Lincoln’s return was developed as a potential path forward.
Originally, the plan was to continue The Walking Dead story with a movie. Then, we decided to do six episodes, primarily to show fans what happened to Rick. The core idea always centered around following Rick’s journey and discovering his fate – that was the main draw for audiences, and it was the intention from the beginning.
It seems Nicotero is suggesting that fan interest in Rick’s story led to one spin-off, and wanting to see him reconnect with Daryl could inspire another. However, AMC has been cautious with The Walking Dead universe, so it’s uncertain when a new series might happen. Still, with the ten-year anniversary of Rick and Daryl’s last on-screen appearance coming up, it could be a perfect time to announce something.
