Harper Grace isn’t marrying anyone without her father’s blessing. 

The country singer created a fake engagement to generate buzz for her new song, “if daddy says no.” She later explained that both the song and the publicity stunt were inspired by a personal experience – her father’s disapproval of a boyfriend she had.

In a recent interview with Country Now, Harper explained that a particular relationship felt disrespectful to both her and her father. She felt the person involved showed no regard for their bond or how her father raised her, and was simply dismissive of him as a parent. Harper described her father as wonderful and expressed being deeply affected by the lack of respect.

Harper got the idea to pretend to be engaged as a way to share an exciting experience with her fans, and she couldn’t help but go through with it.

I know some might think I’m a little crazy, but I pretended to be engaged,” she said. “I just got really caught up in the idea as an art project, especially because the song is so meaningful to me.

This song draws inspiration from Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” as it also centers around a romantic relationship facing disapproval from family.

She described it as the heartbreaking side of a love story, focusing on the painful parts rather than the happy, romantic moments you’d typically expect, like a proposal.

Harper found the experience emotionally relieving, though she led her fans on for a month. She first announced her “engagement” on January 15th, but later revealed it wasn’t true.

She announced “Big news” in a social media post, showing off a large diamond ring while a man—whose face wasn’t visible—stood beside her.

Fans wasted no time wishing her congratulations. 

One fan exclaimed their excitement about the engagement, saying, “I can’t believe it! I’m so happy for you, and the ring is gorgeous!”

And when Harper revealed the truth, another fan lamented, “Can’t believe you did this to us!!”
