After 88 Years, DC Officially Makes Superman a God

Superman has always been incredibly strong, but recent stories have made him more powerful than ever before in his nearly 100-year history. He’s already accomplished amazing feats, like moving planets and even holding a black hole. Now, he’s reaching new levels of power, almost becoming a god – though he hasn’t quite reached that point yet.

The events of DC K.O. put Superman in a tough situation. Darkseid, now incredibly powerful, invaded the main universe, starting with the future and moving toward the present. The only way to defeat him was to become King Omega, a being as powerful as Darkseid himself. Superman nearly achieved this, but Lex Luthor betrayed him at the last minute. However, as DC K.O. ends, Superman returns and gains the power he needs to finally become King Omega.

Superman Becomes King Omega and Saves the DC Universe

In DC K.O. #5, a team of creators including Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson tell the story of a conversation between Time Trapper (a highly evolved Doomsday) and Superman. Time Trapper explains that he can use the vast power he’s accumulated over his long life to bring Superman back to life and let him re-enter the tournament. Superman accepts, and Doomsday transfers all of his energy into Superman, effectively reviving him at the moment of defeat. Empowered, Superman defeats Lex Luthor, absorbs his abilities, and becomes the King Omega of the main DC Universe.

Darkseid wants a fight, but Superman focuses on fixing the destruction Darkseid caused. He essentially recreates the entire DC Universe, shaping it in his own image. This unlocks the power of the Heart of Apokolips, which Superman then uses to confront Darkseid. Their battle spans across all of time and space. With each blow, Superman fights with the strength of a newborn universe, while also restoring the present and removing Darkseid’s control over Earth.

Darkseid pursues Superman through time, hoping to gain control of the past. However, Superman leads him to the very beginning of the universe – the Big Bang – where he absorbs all the potential Omega Energy, dramatically increasing his strength. Their epic battle spans eons, causing strange events across the cosmos. Though immensely powerful, Superman doesn’t want this power for himself. Instead, he uses it to bring back the fallen warriors from the tournament, restoring their universe to its original state and banishing Darkseid to a distant future.

Superman’s Rejection of Godhood Matters More Than Him Becoming a God

Deep down, I always suspected Superman would eventually become King Omega. Scott Snyder specifically said DC K.O. was a Superman story, and it felt right that Superman would be the one to potentially become the DC Universe’s ultimate champion. However, it’s much more fitting for Clark Kent to reject such immense power than to embrace it. It might seem a little underwhelming for Superman to become a cosmic force only to give it up, but wouldn’t that be exactly what we’d expect from him?

The story consistently shows Superman’s dislike of situations where not everyone can succeed. It’s fitting, then, that when he gains immense power, he chooses to share it rather than hoard it – he’s already extraordinary, so what more does he need? Although many consider Superman the most important hero in the DC Universe, Clark himself would disagree. He believes the true strength of the DC Universe lies not in any single individual, but in all the people who make up its world.

Seeing Superman become incredibly powerful was definitely exciting, and his King Omega form will likely be remembered as one of his strongest. However, Superman’s core desire isn’t to be a god, but to connect with humanity. He’d rather empower others and demonstrate their inherent worth than focus on his own power. Ultimately, Superman doesn’t need godlike power; he’s already a perfect hero as he is.
