The popular series Sword Art Online is coming back to PlayStation 5 this summer. A recent preview suggests this new installment will offer a revitalized experience for fans.
Simply put, Echoes of Aincrad delves into the more intense aspects of Sword Art Online. It focuses on surviving the original, deadly game where losing in the virtual world means death in the real world.
This time, you won’t be playing as Kirito. You’ll create and customize your own character, choosing their appearance and how they fight. As you play, you can further improve their abilities by unlocking new skills and perks as they gain experience.
This action RPG really focuses on skillful counterattacks. The game features three different ways to turn your opponent’s attacks against them, rewarding players who can read their enemies’ moves.
You might initially think this game is similar to the ‘Souls’ series, but it’s actually more like a deliberately paced and strategic version of the combat found in games like ‘Sword Art Online’.
We’ve only seen some of the initial gameplay for Sword and Shield, but the developers have explained that how you fight will change a lot depending on the weapon you choose.
The game also lets you customize how you fight with allies. You don’t have to go it alone, as there are more than ten different NPC companions you can team up with, and each one has a special skill.
It seems like teamwork is central to the gameplay. For instance, if you successfully block an attack, your allies will automatically launch a strong counterattack. You can also direct them to either focus on defense or become more aggressive.
Wondering if you can play with friends? There’s currently no word on co-op features. Bandai Namco has only confirmed that Echoes of Aincrad will feature a campaign designed for one player.
We’re optimistic about trying out the partner system, as it has the potential to make Echoes of Aincrad unique in a crowded game market.
The game also features a lot of exploration. You’ll journey through large, open environments with plenty of points of interest to discover.
You’ve faced similar challenges before, but this time you’ll need to explore and discover the map. Finding designated safe zones will help you understand the area, and you’ll need to collect certain items to overcome obstacles in your path.
Lots of challenging optional bosses and the chance to find valuable items should encourage players to explore. During the gameplay demonstration, we saw many encounters with powerful enemies simply roaming different areas.
Honestly, the loot in this game is amazing! When you take down bosses, they drop a ton of cool stuff. If you don’t get a sweet new weapon immediately, you’ll definitely find materials to make your current gear even better. It’s a really good system.
We didn’t fully explore these features, but based on other Sword Art Online games, it’s likely you’ll spend a good amount of time collecting materials and improving your gear.
The game makes a strong first impression. Echoes of Aincrad seems to be exactly what Sword Art Online games have been missing – a larger budget and a return to the core elements of the series, focusing on exciting battles and carefully exploring a captivating world.
The game ‘Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online’ is coming to PlayStation 5 on July 10th. Are you excited about it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
