Harry Styles is painting quite a picture with his new song.
Harry Styles’ new album, Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally, came out on March 4th. Some listeners believe the song “Paint by Numbers” hints at his split from Olivia Wilde, whom he dated for almost two years before their relationship ended in 2022.
In the eleventh song on the album, Harry sings, “You’re so lucky, it’s almost funny,” and continues, “You’re carrying the burden of all the American kids you’ve hurt.”
Okay, so when Olivia and Harry started dating, she’d just gotten out of this long-term thing with Jason Sudeikis, you know? They have two adorable kids, Otis and Daisy, who are like, the sweetest. And honestly, some of us fans were joking around on X – we noticed Harry mentioned ‘American children’ in an interview, and we were like, ‘OMG, is he talking about Otis and Daisy?!’ It was a playful thing, like, ‘Harry doesn’t want to be a stepfather!’ I’ve been following them both for ages, and it’s just… everything is so fascinating!
In other parts of the song, Harry seemed to acknowledge the significant age difference and different points in life between himself and his partner.
He continued, asking if telling her his age – that he wasn’t even thirty-three – was a terrible mistake. He suggested she practice being kinder to herself and live a realistic lifestyle.
The song seems to be about a difficult choice Harry Styles faced in a relationship. He ultimately had to decide between staying with a woman who already had children or ending the relationship. He later dated Taylor Russell and is currently linked to Zoë Kravitz.
He sings about a life spent choosing between options, like children playing with water guns and running around. It’s also about learning to follow a set path – like painting by numbers – and seeing things inevitably change and blend together.

Fans immediately noticed connections between the song and Harry Styles’ relationship with Olivia Wilde, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) posting on March 4th that the song ‘Paint by Numbers’ seemed to be about her.
Someone else acknowledged the theory, but stressed their disagreement, stating simply, “I don’t agree with it.”
Despite being seen together on multiple occasions over their almost two-year relationship—including Olivia bringing her children to Harry’s Love On Tour concerts—Harry Styles never publicly confirmed they were dating.
In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, he stated he hadn’t been publicly linked to anyone romantically. While the article mentioned Olivia and referred to her as his girlfriend, he clarified that being photographed with someone doesn’t automatically mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship.
Olivia was more direct about her relationship, particularly when discussing how quickly she moved on from Jason and started dating Harry.

She told Vanity Fair in 2022 that the rumor she left Jason for Harry is false. She explained that her relationship with Jason had ended before she even met Harry, adding that, like all breakups, it wasn’t an instant thing.
The director of Booksmart also admitted that the media coverage of the relationship likely impacted her children, similar to what Harry mentioned in his recent song.
She added that she doesn’t see why anyone would make up stories or create unnecessary drama around this, asking, “Haven’t the children already suffered enough?”

Harry Styles was born on February 1, 1994, in Evesham, Worcestershire, to Anne Cox and Desmond Styles. He grew up with an older sister, Gemma, who was born in 1990.
The family settled in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, when he was very young, and his mother, Anne, recalls his first word being “cat.”
Styles described his hometown – a village of around 5,000 people – as both “quite boring” and “picturesque.”

In his autobiography, Dare to Dream, Harry remembered being unusually upset – he rarely cried – when his parents told him and his sister, Gemma, that they were getting divorced. He was seven years old at the time.
He admitted he hadn’t fully understood the situation at the time, but he was simply heartbroken that his parents were separating.
Des and Anne stayed together for two more years. Then, Des moved out and Anne relocated with Harry and Gemma to Northwich, a rural area in Cheshire. Later, when Harry was a teenager, the family returned to live in Holmes Chapel.
Anne and Robin Twist got married in 2013 after being a couple for more than ten years. Their son, Harry, proudly walked his mother down the aisle and also served as best man at the wedding.

Everyone who knew him said Harry was a lively, imaginative child who loved being the center of attention – a natural performer, whether he was singing or playfully running around in public. He thrived in school plays, and the classic rock music he shared with his dad, like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen, influenced his own musical preferences.
As a long-time fan, I was fascinated to learn from Louisa Jepson’s biography, Harry Styles—Every Piece of Me, that his very first recording was actually Elvis’ “The Girl of My Best Friend” – he made it on a karaoke machine his grandfather gave him! It’s so cool to think about where it all started. And as he grew up, his musical tastes really developed – Coldplay, John Mayer, and Noel Gallagher quickly became some of his biggest influences, joining Elvis as favorites.
Harry joined his first band around age 14 hoping to play bass, but since another member already filled that role, he became the singer instead. The band, called White Eskimo, won their school’s Battle of the Bands, earning a £100 prize and their first paid performance at a wedding.
Anne told Now magazine in 2010 that her son has always been confident. She said he’s been making people happy since childhood and she always predicted he’d become a performer.

Harry earned a little extra scratch—£6 an hour—working at W. Mandeville bakery on Saturdays.
According to his former boss, Simon Wakefield, he was the politest employee they ever had. Wakefield told the Mirror in 2013 that customers particularly liked him, recalling Styles returning to the shop to film scenes for the movie One Direction: This Is Us.
Mr. Wakefield explained that the shop became popular with young girls when Harry worked there. He remembered times when as many as twelve girls would come in at once. Even now, groups of around twenty girls occasionally visit and take pictures of the shop. Harry was a dedicated employee, responsible for everything from serving customers and cleaning the back room to scrubbing floors, washing trays, and wiping down the counter.

Anne was the one who ended up sending Harry’s X Factor application in when he got cold feet.
I remember when I first saw him audition for The X Factor back in 2010. He was only sixteen, but already had this amazing charm. He sang “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder completely a cappella, and honestly, it was incredible – everyone always said he had a gift, especially his mum! He was so passionate, he explained that singing was his dream, and if the people who could help him achieve it didn’t believe in him, it would be a huge blow to everything he was working towards.
Okay, so it was SO unfair! Harry didn’t actually make it to the final boys group, or even the one right before that, which was devastating. But honestly, the show clearly saw something special in him because they just couldn’t let him go completely! They knew he was too good to lose, even if the voting didn’t reflect it. I was screaming at the TV, I swear!
Oh my gosh, it was destiny! Simon and Nicole – Nicole was filling in for Cheryl at the time, can you believe it? – they saw something special in Harry and decided to put him with Liam, Niall, Zayn, and Louis. It was the beginning of everything! I just knew they were meant to be together, and Simon and Nicole saw it too! It was magical.
In the 2013 documentary One Direction: Going Our Way, Nicole Scherzinger jokingly admits to playing a key, though often unacknowledged, role in finding the magic that made One Direction special. Meanwhile, judge Louis Walsh famously didn’t recognize Harry Styles’ potential.
It was Harry, however, who came up with the group’s name.
He remembered thinking the name sounded good when they were brainstorming. They tossed around a few ideas, but he couldn’t recall exactly how it was chosen. He simply suggested it, and everyone agreed, so it ended up sticking.
Zayn explained on Phoenix’s Hot 97.5 FM in 2012 that the band initially brainstormed a bunch of potential names. Harry suggested the name they ultimately chose – he simply texted it to the group, and they all agreed it worked. Apparently, Liam had some pretty awkward suggestions too, including one called ‘USP,’ which stood for Unique Selling Point.

In October 2010, One Direction hit the X Factor stage live for the first time.
Even though I’m his mother, Harry is a genuinely kind person, and he’s presenting himself on the show just as he is at home,” Anne told Now magazine.
When Harry went to the X Factor house, I told him, ‘Stay yourself, Harry, and don’t become someone unpleasant. Remember, fame won’t change the fact you still have chores to do when you get back home, like doing the dishes.’
Despite being naturally suited for performing, Harry began experiencing panic attacks before each live show, according to Alice Montgomery’s biography, Harry. He once even vomited in the hallway beforehand. Eventually, he found that drinking sparkling water and practicing deep breathing helped calm his nerves.

Despite their later success, One Direction didn’t win The X Factor in 2010. They finished in third place, with Matt Cardle winning the seventh series and Rebecca Ferguson coming in second.

Harry recalled his primary school years, telling biographer Louisa Jepson that he got along with both girls and boys. He wasn’t like some boys who disliked girls, and he considered himself friends with everyone.
You know, as someone who observes people and relationships, it’s always interesting to hear about early patterns. I recently heard from Will Sweeny, a bandmate of Harry Styles, and he shared something quite charming! Apparently, even back in primary school, Harry had a knack for connecting with girls. Will said it was noticeable even when Harry was around ten years old – he was already having ‘proper’ girlfriends! It seems Harry’s always had a natural, undeniable way with people, and especially with the ladies.
Louis Tomlinson jokingly complained to The Sun that the biggest issue with living with Harry was the endless parade of women coming and going. He said it was “relentless.” Of course, Louis was dating Eleanor Calder at the time, so he was likely teasing Harry.
However, Jepson’s dad, Desmond, promised him that when his son truly cared for someone, he was completely devoted to that one woman.
Harry has always prioritized safety, especially when it comes to intimacy. He recalled being worried about a potential pregnancy the first time he had sex, even though they had taken precautions. Thankfully, everything was okay. He believes it’s irresponsible to assume things will be fine without taking proper safety measures.

Following One Direction’s win on The X Factor in 2011, Harry Styles publicly expressed interest in both Frankie Bridge, a 22-year-old member of The Saturdays, and Caroline Flack, the 31-year-old host of The Xtra Factor, the X Factor’s companion show.
He confessed to having a long-time crush on Frankie Bridge, dating back to when she was in S Club Juniors as an eight-year-old. He even admitted to having posters of her and expressed a desire to kiss her. He also shared that both Frankie and Caroline Flack are his celebrity crushes, calling them both attractive. After the interview, he posted on The X Factor website, hoping Caroline Flack would see his message and say hello, adding that he thinks she’s gorgeous.
Harry and Caroline first met in October 2011 at an after-party for a show at London’s W Hotel, and they left together. However, according to Alice Montgomery, nothing significant happened between them that evening.
In her 2015 memoir, Storm in a C Cup, Caroline Flack described how she and the other person initially connected easily – they were both single, enjoyed each other’s company, and had fun. She explained that problems only began when their relationship became public. At first, she said, things were lighthearted, and he’d even playfully mentioned being attracted to older women.
Despite claims that they were just friends, Harry Styles’ fans, known as One Directioners, strongly protested any romantic connection between him and Caroline Flack. This led Flack to publicly state, “Harry and I are close friends, and he’s a genuinely kind person. I’m shocked and upset to be receiving death threats because of this.”
“Flack off, Caroline,” read a banner on display at a 1D concert.
The 14-year age difference between them continued to draw criticism from both the public and the media. Caroline Flack responded to the negativity in an interview with Now magazine, saying she didn’t understand why people found it so shocking. “If two people connect and are happy, why does it bother anyone else?” she asked, adding that she found it strange how quickly people focused on the negative aspects.
As One Direction was really taking off and becoming huge internationally, my partner and I decided to focus on our own paths and quietly ended our relationship in early 2012. It just felt like the right time for both of us to move forward individually.

In 2012, Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction appeared on an episode of iCarly. The band was scheduled to perform, but Harry jokingly pretends to catch “jungle worms” after drinking from Carly’s water bottle – right after a doctor tells her she might still be contagious and shouldn’t kiss anyone. Even after he’s supposedly recovered, Harry pretends to still be sick just to get Carly to keep looking after him.
After a bit of a scare, Harry recovers, and One Direction is able to perform their hit song, “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.”
Okay, seriously, this little piece of history STILL lives in my head! I mean, it’s out there on YouTube, but the tweets? Oh my god, the tweets! I found one from 2013 – it’s EVERYTHING. Apparently, Harry Styles actually refused to kiss Miranda Cosgrove in the original script for their iCarly episode! Can you even?! It’s a tiny detail, but it’s burned into my brain forever. Harry Styles refusing a kiss from Miranda Cosgrove? Iconic.

Back in 2012, after Taylor Swift and Harry Styles met at the Kids’ Choice Awards, Justin Bieber told the Daily Mirror that a very famous artist had told him they thought Harry was attractive. However, he wouldn’t reveal who it was, saying he’d promised to keep it a secret.
That summer, Harry told Seventeen magazine that Taylor Swift was both incredibly talented and a genuinely kind person. He said, “She really couldn’t be sweeter.”
Their romance wasn’t expected to be long-term, but Taylor was there for One Direction’s first concert at Madison Square Garden that December – a show where Harry was playfully showered with bras, underwear, and even an iPhone. For a few bright months, they were the biggest couple in pop music, from their public date in Central Park to a quick trip to Harry’s hometown of Northwich. It all ended with a disappointing Caribbean vacation, leaving Taylor alone on a boat.
Reflecting on their date in New York City, Styles told Rolling Stone in 2017 that relationships are challenging no matter how old you are. He added that being 18 and figuring things out made it even harder. He explained that it should have been a straightforward date with someone he liked, but it was a bit awkward and ultimately a learning experience. Ultimately, he just wanted it to feel like a normal date.
Okay, so he finally talked a little about Taylor’s songs, “Out of the Woods” and “Style” – you know, the ones everyone knows are about him! He basically said he feels lucky to have been part of what inspired those songs, because those are the songs that really get to you, the ones that are the hardest to talk about. He said it’s all about what happened between the two of us, and he’s never going to spill everything. Like, ever. Honestly, it’s frustrating, but also… it’s kinda perfect that he’s still keeping some things private. It just proves how real it was!
Asked if he had anything to tell Swift, he mused, “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the
time together.

Harry likes snowboarding.
In January 2014, a source told TopMob News that Harry and Kendall Jenner seemed to be enjoying each other’s company after they were seen together in Mammoth Lakes. Kendall later described Harry as a “cool” friend at the American Music Awards in November 2013.

Harry also likes swimming.
That marked the beginning of a complicated friendship between Styles and Jenner, spanning several years and taking them to places like Southern California, Anguilla, and St. Barts. It was never entirely clear if they were just friends or something more.
Harry Styles hinted in a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone that a recent past relationship – possibly with Kendall Jenner, following his relationship with Taylor Swift – heavily influenced his album. He explained that sometimes he prefers subtle acknowledgements in his music, while other times he likes to make the connection very obvious, hoping the intended person will recognize it’s about them.

Any photos circulating over the years that seemed to show Harry and Louis – or “Larry,” as fans nicknamed them – kissing were not real.
Harry Styles clarified on Australian television show Sunrise that a photo of him and Louis Tomlinson appearing to kiss was altered. He pointed out that the original picture, which appeared in a magazine, actually included another woman in the shot.
Louis explained that this had happened to him and Niall too. He described how, when someone is being targeted, people will often isolate them. He thought it was a surprisingly effective tactic.

Oh my god, can you believe it? It was Harry, Harry Styles, who first brought up the idea of a break back in 2014! They were recording in London, and it was all so…Beatles-y, you know? Just imagine, he was the one who thought they maybe needed some time apart. It still gets me, honestly!
He explained to Rolling Stone that they didn’t want to overwork their fans. While it would have been easy to just keep touring, the band felt it was important to protect their reputation and avoid losing the support of their audience. They knew pushing themselves too hard would lead to burnout and ultimately damage people’s faith in the group.

It was tough to watch, but everyone around him seemed to understand. Zayn was really battling anxiety at the time, and things weren’t going well with Perrie – the rumors about him being unfaithful were everywhere. He ended up taking the first step to leave One Direction in March 2015, and it felt like a huge shock to us all.
After Zayn Malik left One Direction, the remaining members announced in August that they would be taking a break. Their final concert was held on October 31, 2015, at Sheffield Arena in Britain – a particularly sad night for their fans.

After Zayn Malik said One Direction’s songs weren’t very cool—specifically, that he wouldn’t put them on while having dinner with someone he was trying to impress—Harry Styles responded with tact and avoided any conflict.
Honestly, it broke my heart a little to hear him talk about feeling that way, but you know what? He’s following his passion, and I could never wish anything bad on him. I just want him to be happy and do what he loves, always! It’s all I’ve ever wanted for him.
If you’re unhappy with something, it’s perfectly okay to switch gears and focus on something else. I’m happy for him that he’s pursuing his passions, and I wish him all the best.

He explained to Rolling Stone that he didn’t want to simply write ‘stories’ for his first solo album, appropriately named Harry Styles. He wanted to share his own experiences and be truly honest – something he hadn’t prioritized in his music before.
That being said, the game was on when it came to figuring out what, or who, he was singing about.
Okay, so Harry gets me, truly gets me! He was talking about how he needs to keep his work life and personal life totally separate. It’s not some act or a way to stay relevant, he just…needs it. He said it’s like going back to being a schoolkid when he’s home, and that would be impossible if he was always ‘on,’ always showing everything. Honestly, the way he described switching between those two worlds? He said it’s his favorite thing, and I totally get it! It’s just…amazing, the way he can do that. It’s so cool.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by storytelling through music. This particular song really struck me. It’s incredibly powerful because it’s written as if a mother is experiencing a difficult childbirth. She’s told her baby is healthy, but she doesn’t have much time left – just five minutes, to be exact. It’s a heartbreaking scenario where she uses those precious moments to encourage her child to live a full and successful life, essentially giving them a final blessing and urging them to ‘go forth and conquer.’ It’s a really moving concept.

Harry Styles is known for his great hair, no matter how he styles it. Back in 2017, British Vogue took a close look at his dressing table before a Paris concert and discovered he used seven different hair products, along with Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille fragrance, a Diptyque candle, and Sunday Riley face oil.
Vogue beauty editor Lisa Niven playfully pointed out that Harry seems to have the self-care routine of a professional beauty editor, giving him credit for using products like Ouai hair care and, especially, Sunday Riley oil. She added with a smile, ‘Who wouldn’t request a Diptyque candle when making requests for an event?’
Only a few million people noticed he’d gotten a haircut before he began actively promoting his music as a solo artist.
He told Vogue that he initially felt vulnerable after shaving his head. He explained it wasn’t a difficult choice, and the hair was ultimately used to create a wig.

Okay, let’s talk about something a little unexpected! It’s a fascinating bit of anatomy, but yes, Harry actually has four nipples. He has the standard two, and then two extra, smaller ones right underneath them. It’s more common than you might think, actually – a harmless variation!

When Harry was in One Direction, he was known for his casual style – tight pants and wrinkled t-shirts. But since then, he’s completely transformed his look, often wearing sharply tailored suits, or at least stylish jackets and pants. He’s even become a face for Gucci, appearing in two of their advertising campaigns.
Harry Styles shared with Entertainment Tonight that Shania Twain was a major influence on both his music and his sense of style, calling her ‘amazing’.
Wait, what?
Growing up, my mom Anne loved playing artists like Shania Twain and Norah Jones, along with the band Savage Garden. Meanwhile, my dad Des was teaching me about rock and roll at home.

Harry balanced pursuing his music with acting, and in July 2017, he appeared in his first film, Christopher Nolan’s epic war movie Dunkirk. The film was a critical success, receiving eight Academy Award nominations and winning three.
Harry Styles said that auditioning for Christopher Nolan was more difficult than auditioning for Simon Cowell. He explained on ITV’s This Morning that Nolan doesn’t offer any feedback during auditions – he just silently observes from the back of the room. Styles described the experience as intensely nerve-wracking, leaving him to endlessly replay the audition in his mind and worry about whether he’d made a good impression.
At least he could rest assured that Nolan wasn’t giving him special treatment.
Honestly, I didn’t fully grasp just how well-known Harry was at the time. My kids mentioned him, of course, but it didn’t really register with me. That’s why I chose him – he simply was the best person for the role and completely proved he deserved it during the audition process.
Styles admitted that walking onto the set of a big-budget war epic was a bit intimidating at first.
You know, one of the things that really struck me when I first stepped onto the set was just how massive everything was! It’s truly overwhelming. And thinking back to my first film, it felt like a real baptism by fire – I had to learn to navigate a whole new world, and quickly! It was a bit like learning to swim with weights on, honestly.
One particularly intense scene involved Harry Styles’ character, Alex, nearly drowning. Styles told USA Today that filming the scene was genuinely frightening because he was also aware of his own limited breath-holding ability, which surprisingly enhanced his performance. He recalled being asked about his swimming skills just before arriving on set in France, and realizing the role would involve a lot of time in the water – to the point where he joked they seemed intent on seeing how long it would take for him to actually drown.

And…he’s funny, too.
In 2017, Harry Styles was everywhere promoting his music, but he also successfully stepped in to host The Late Late Show twice – once in 2017 and again in 2019 – even mastering American-style political comedy. Interestingly, years earlier while looking for a house in London’s Hampstead Heath, he lived with Late Late Show executive producer Ben Winston and his wife, Meredith, for almost two years, sleeping on a mattress in their attic.
He was away a lot, being a major pop star, but still.
Styles admitted he used to be too intimidated by Meredith to have guests over. However, Winston explained that wasn’t always the case, and it was fun to see the famous people who would sometimes stay in the attic or hang out with them. They never talked shop, and Styles would act like his recent performances for crowds of 80,000 in Rio de Janeiro hadn’t even happened.
I’ll never forget when Harry was on Saturday Night Live in 2017 – he totally nailed his impression of Mick Jagger! It was hilarious. Then, a year later on The Tonight Show, he jokingly told Jimmy Fallon he’d love to host the show himself. And Jimmy, being the amazing guy he is, pretended to faint, letting Harry take over the desk! It was such a fun moment and proved how comfortable and naturally funny Harry is.
Styles returned to SNL as host and musical guest in 2019 and crushed it.

CBS’s show Happy Together, which marked Harry Styles’ debut as an executive producer on American network television, wasn’t renewed after its first season of 13 episodes.

After his first solo tour ended in July 2018, having sold nearly 1 million tickets across 89 shows, a total of $1.2 million was donated to charity. This included a portion of the tour’s profits, as well as contributions from Live Nation and the GLSEN PRIDE campaign.

Harry Styles’ career soared after he won his first Grammy in 2021 for his song “Watermelon Sugar,” and nothing seemed able to stop him. In 2023, he continued his success, winning two Grammys for his album Harry’s House, including the prestigious Album of the Year award. When accepting the Album of the Year trophy, he humbly shared, “This is a rare honor for someone like me, and it feels amazing.”

Harry’s accomplishments go beyond his Grammy win. In 2020, he made history as the first solo male to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Beyond his own songs, Harry also co-wrote hits for other artists. He contributed to Ariana Grande’s popular song “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,” and the track “Someday” by Meghan Trainor and Michael Bublé.

Most people know Harry Styles as a singer and actor – he even appeared in Olivia Wilde’s film, Don’t Worry Darling. But he considered other career paths too. In 2020, he told Ellen DeGeneres that if he wasn’t a musician, he’d love to be a florist.
He also thought about becoming a physiotherapist. He explained on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show that he initially wanted to be a footballer, but wasn’t skilled enough. He then considered physiotherapy, but learned from a career advisor at school that there weren’t many jobs available in that field, so he decided to pursue music instead.
