The 1970s saw the beginnings of popular horror films like Black Christmas, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween, but the 1980s truly embraced the slasher genre. Franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Child’s Play, known for their masked killers and inventive special effects, made the ‘80s the peak of slasher films and paved the way for self-aware horror in the ‘90s. With the genre enjoying a resurgence now in the 2020s, a classic ‘80s slasher has just become available to stream on Peacock – perfect timing for fans.
As a huge horror fan, I was so excited to see that the original Friday the 13th is now streaming on Peacock! It’s seriously one of the movies that kicked off the whole slasher boom of the ’80s, and it still holds up. They added it on March 1st, along with Friday the 13th – Part III, and even Friday the 13th Part 2! It’s perfect timing, especially with a Friday the 13th coming up this month. Plus, Peacock is getting ready to bring back the franchise with a new prequel series called Crystal Lake later this year, so it’s a great time to revisit these classics!
Friday the 13th Is a Slasher Masterpiece
If you ask a horror fan to name famous slasher villains, the original Friday the 13th is sure to be near the top of the list. The film is a classic of the genre, and it really perfected the formula that Halloween started – a sad backstory for the killer, the trope of the ‘final girl,’ teenage victims, shots from the killer’s perspective, stalking, and realistic gore. This helped define the slasher subgenre of the 1980s. It also popularized the isolated summer camp setting, which became a horror staple and created a feeling of being trapped. Friday the 13th prioritized entertainment, shocks, and intense thrills, delivering more brutal and graphic kills than earlier slashers, and it’s known for one of the most surprising twists in horror history.
Despite some initial criticism for its gore, Friday the 13th became a beloved and lasting horror classic. It also started one of the most famous horror franchises ever, with 12 movies released so far and a new show, Crystal Lake, coming soon. The Peacock series will tell the story of how Jason and Pamela Voorhees became the characters we know, showing what happened before the first film.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock added a lot of new content in March, including many popular movies. Horror fans can now watch almost all of the Leprechaun films, except for the newest one, Leprechaun Returns. Other additions include classics like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Legally Blonde, action-packed John Wick: Chapter 4, and both Ted and Ted 2. You can also stream the second season of Peacock’s Ted series.
