Pixar’s newest movie, Hoppers, takes a thoughtful look at community and taking action. The story centers on Mabel, a teen who’s determined to protect her neighborhood park from being developed. To do this, she cleverly takes over a technology program, giving her control of a robotic beaver and the ability to talk to animals. Be warned: this description contains spoilers!
Amidst the resulting confusion, Mabel’s attempts to bring the animals together actually create even more danger, and inadvertently help a truly creepy villain cause a lot of harm. Ultimately, Hoppers presents a surprisingly complex and challenging view of community than one might anticipate from a film like this.
How Hoppers Makes Mabel The Big Threat Of Her Own Story
While Hoppers throws many obstacles in Mabel’s path as she tries to protect her favorite meadow, a lot of the trouble comes from her own actions. The story shows Mabel as a kind-hearted but disorganized kid who isn’t afraid to do things others wouldn’t.
Even as she grows older, her determination to protect the Glade leads her to take control of the Hopper technology, allowing her to communicate directly with the animals. Although she successfully reveals Jerry’s deceitful behavior, this action ultimately unites all other animal groups against humans.
She often creates problems for herself when she tries to handle things on her own, instead of collaborating with Sam and the others. Being George’s companion actually makes things worse. The film ultimately shows Mabel learning the importance of being considerate and patient, which helps her create effective plans and work well with a team.
The True Villain Of Hoppers Has A Really Dark Plan

At first, the movie Hoppers makes it seem like the mayor, Jerry, is the main bad guy. However, Mabel’s interactions with animals reveal that Titus is actually the true villain. He’s a proud and power-hungry prince from the Insect Kingdom who becomes king when his mother is unintentionally crushed by Mabel.
The other animal groups are upset with humans and angry about Jerry’s actions taking their homes, but it’s Titus who really pushes them toward war. After getting a robotic human body through a captured Sam, Titus shows his real goal: to take complete control of everything.
Titus stands as a stark contrast to Mabel, as she too was determined to achieve her aims by any means necessary. While Mabel’s bad decisions usually happened impulsively, Titus carefully plans to sabotage a town rally by blasting sound from Jerry’s secret speakers in the woods.
The speakers were strong enough to scare away animals, clearing the area for Jerry’s road. But Titus has upgraded the technology to be deadly – anyone caught in the sound wave will be killed. It’s a truly scary plan that nearly succeeds, which makes Titus’s sudden death feel more justified within the story.
Hopper’s Ending Unites People In Some Surprising Ways
In the finale of Hoppers, humans and animals team up to save Beaverton from a forest fire that begins after Mabel defeats Titus. This restores the natural beauty of the glade. This positive outcome is earned because the characters have worked through their personal problems and learned to cooperate.
Perhaps the most noticeable change is between Mabel and Jerry, as Jerry is now slowing down his work on the highway to preserve the glade. Although they don’t always agree, they’ve both begun to respect each other – something that was lacking before.
Animals and humans have also formed stronger connections, like George and Mabel maintaining their friendship even after the Hoppers program ends and they can no longer directly communicate. Ultimately, the story of Hoppers is about finding ways to connect and understand each other.
Mabel quickly builds connections with the animals, but this newfound unity is exploited by characters like Titus who use it to achieve their own aims. Similarly, Jerry’s attempts to control the animals backfire, ultimately leading to a dangerous confrontation with them.
Truly understanding and sharing the feelings of others builds strong communities and helps everyone achieve more. When people like Mabel and Jerry begin to see things from another person’s perspective, like George does, they can not only solve problems but also repair the harm caused by their earlier, self-centered behavior.
The True Meaning Of Hoppers
The film Hoppers really highlights how important empathy and understanding are. Mabel’s anger comes from feeling helpless and frustrated, which makes her push people away, create conflict, and ultimately cause problems.
Interestingly, the only named character who dies in the film is killed by Mabel – she accidentally squashes the Insect Queen while feeling overwhelmed. This action doesn’t solve anything and really damages her relationship with George. The film, Hoppers, clearly shows that trying to do things alone leads to trouble.
However, inaction isn’t a solution. If Mabel had surrendered or followed Jerry’s lead, his underhanded schemes would have ruined the Glade. Hoppers emphasizes that taking action is crucial, particularly because it can motivate others to do the same.
Jerry connected with people because he was well-liked, and George brought others together with his positive and determined personality. Mabel takes inspiration from both of them, learning to be more patient and understanding, while her own strong will motivates Jerry and George to take more initiative.
In Hoppers, both sides are essential for maintaining order and preventing people like Titus from exploiting any resulting confusion. This adds a layer of complexity to the film’s message about activism, giving Hoppers a surprisingly profound social message beneath its surface story.
