Pixar Announces New Slate of Films Including Third Monsters, Inc. Movie

Pixar has announced its future movie lineup, and it includes a new Monsters, Inc. film! The studio revealed plans for several upcoming features, with the third installment in the Monsters, Inc. series being a highlight.

Beyond a third Monsters, Inc. movie, Pixar is developing several new projects. These include Gatto, an animated film about a cat burglar pulling off a daring heist in Venice, and Ono Ghost Market, inspired by folklore about magical marketplaces where the living and the dead meet. They’re also creating their first-ever musical, which will be directed by Domee Shi, known for Turning Red.

Details about these new features were revealed in a recent, in-depth profile of Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Peter Docter, published by the Wall Street Journal. The article also looked inside the studio following the success of their latest animated film, Hoppers. Docter has been a vital part of Pixar for years, having previously directed Monsters, Inc. as one of his first projects.

Since then, Pete Docter has directed some of Pixar’s most successful films, including Up (2009) and Soul (2020), each of which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Interestingly, Docter has said he initially turned to animation to avoid uncomfortable social interactions. He told the Wall Street Journal that he found it easier to draw people than to talk to them.

What Else Is Next for Pixar?

Beyond the recently revealed Pixar films, the studio has several other movies coming to cinemas soon. On June 19th, Toy Story 5 will return with Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack reprising their roles as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie. This time, the toys face a new challenge: the rise of electronics and what it means for their future.

I was reading about Pete Docter’s plans for the next Toy Story movie, and it sounds really interesting. He talked about how the new character, LilyPad (voiced by Greta Lee), won’t just impact the toys, but also Bonnie. Apparently, Bonnie’s eight now and starting to really focus on making friends and fitting in, so her parents got her LilyPad to help with that. It feels like a natural progression for her character, honestly.

Director Pete Docter explained that the LilyPad, a device similar to an iPad, is designed to help Bonnie grow up and move past needing toys like Buzz and Woody. He described LilyPad as a bit mischievous and challenging, because it’s meant to encourage Bonnie to socialize and develop beyond playing with toys.
