The 2025 Game Awards featured several exciting reveals, but one game particularly caught the attention of Yakuza fans. Gang of Dragon, a new action-adventure title from the creator of Yakuza, Toshihiro Nagoshi, was first shown at last year’s event with a compelling, action-filled trailer. Unfortunately, fans are now concerned that Gang of Dragon might be canceled, joining the list of games that never see the light of day.
Toshihiro Nagoshi’s studio, Nagoshi Studio, is currently working on Gang of Dragon. While NetEase has been financially supporting the game’s development, a recent Bloomberg report indicates they plan to end funding in May. If Nagoshi Studio can’t find new investors, it may be forced to close, potentially canceling Gang of Dragon. Here’s a summary of the situation.
Gang of Dragon At Risk of Cancelation As Nagoshi Studio Loses NetEase Funding
Nagoshi Studio was created in 2021 after Toshihiro Nagoshi left Sega to work on his own games. The studio quickly received funding from NetEase, a company famous for ongoing, multiplayer games like Marvel Rivals. However, NetEase, like other game companies, is currently reducing its business activities, and this includes ending its support for Nagoshi Studio and their game, Gang of Dragon.
It’s understandable, though unfortunate, that NetEase has decided to move away from the game Gang of Dragon. NetEase has found great success with ongoing, character-collecting games like Where Winds Meet, Destiny Rising, and Marvel Rivals. Releasing a single-player action-adventure game like Gang of Dragon would be a departure for them, and given the current economic situation, it seems they’ve decided against taking that chance.
Bloomberg reports that NetEase is pausing funding for Nagoshi Studio because finishing Gang of Dragon is proving more costly than originally anticipated. The game is still in early stages of development – only a brief teaser was shown at The Game Awards, with few details released. While Gang of Dragon hasn’t been canceled, Nagoshi is now seeking new investors for his studio and its debut game, and is discussing the use of existing game assets with NetEase.

It’s currently unclear what this means for the future of the game. It sounds like Toshihiro Nagoshi is trying to save the project, but that will probably require finding a new investor. This investor would need to both buy the rights to everything already created and cover the costs of finishing the game. Reports suggest NetEase has told Nagoshi Studio they’ll need to fully fund the rest of development themselves if they want to remain independent, and with how ambitious the game is, that will be expensive.
Given his success with the Yakuza series, people are really excited to see what Nagoshi does with Gang of Dragon. The game already has over 12,000 wishlists on Steam based on a single, short trailer. However, it’s unclear if this enthusiasm will be enough to attract a major publisher, especially since many gaming companies are currently reducing their investments.
