The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers sparked a huge fanbase, and shows like Zeo, In Space, Lost Galaxy, and Time Force kept the series exciting and growing. In 2003, Disney took over, starting with Ninja Storm and continuing for six seasons, before the show returned to its original creator, Saban. Sixteen years ago, the most popular Power Rangers series from the Disney years first aired.
Following Power Rangers Jungle Fury, Power Rangers RPM was the final Power Rangers season produced under Disney’s ownership. Premiering on March 7, 2009, with the episode “The Road to Corinth,” RPM featured a new team of Rangers battling a science fiction villain in a post-apocalyptic world – a significant change for the series. This unique theme and setting initially appealed to fans, and over time, RPM has gained a devoted following and become a cult classic, successfully concluding the Disney era of Power Rangers.
Power Rangers RPM Doesn’t Feel Like Any Other Season, And That’s Why It Works
The episode “The Road to Corinth” really establishes the feel for the whole season. It quickly introduces viewers to Corinth, the last city inhabited by humans, and the devastated world beyond its walls. This world has been overrun by Venjix, a powerful computer virus that infected every computer and then built an army of robots to conquer the planet – and it’s been largely successful. As a result, the situation in Corinth is dire, particularly with intense fighting happening right outside the city.
This season of Power Rangers takes a much grittier and more intense approach, mixing the action of Mad Max with science fiction. Unlike many other seasons, RPM keeps you guessing and builds real suspense, yet it still feels true to the core Power Rangers experience. It’s a tricky balance, but RPM pulls it off brilliantly.
The first episode introduces the main team members, but only three initially transform into Power Rangers: Scott Truman (Red), Summer Landsdown (Yellow), and Flynn McAllistair (Blue). We also meet future Rangers Ziggy Grover (Green) and Dillon (Black) in the same episode.
With its sci-fi story, setting after a major disaster, and a slightly darker tone, Power Rangers RPM stands out as the best Power Rangers series made during Disney’s run.
