The world of Game of Thrones is growing beyond the original show, and it’s doing so successfully. House of the Dragon proved popular, and the new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is even more of a hit. Beyond television, several new Game of Thrones projects have been announced, with a major movie currently in fast-track development.
Initial reports suggest the upcoming Game of Thrones movie will center around Aegon I, also known as Aegon the Conqueror—the founder of the Targaryen dynasty who invaded Westeros and united much of the Seven Kingdoms. Aegon’s story has been a major part of the Game of Thrones universe, and many fans have wanted to see it adapted for the screen. However, a movie wasn’t the format many expected, and some fans are disappointed with this new direction for the franchise.
Aegon The Conqueror’s Story Should’ve Been A Game of Thrones Miniseries (And Almost Was)

It’s safe to say many fans were hoping for a TV series about Aegon the Conqueror, and it’s a bit of a letdown that we’re getting a movie instead. The story itself – how Aegon became Lord of Dragonstone, married his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, and claimed the dragon Balerion – lends itself well to a longer format. But the movie will likely focus on his return to Dragonstone, his desire to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, and his ultimate success – including forging the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies and establishing the Targaryens as the rulers of Westeros.
Okay, the core idea here is genuinely strong – we’re talking big-screen potential, for sure. Imagine the dragon battles and army clashes with a proper movie budget; it could easily surpass anything we saw in Game of Thrones. But, and this is a big but, the folks behind this need to really study what worked – and didn’t work – with the recent Game of Thrones spin-offs. There’s a lot to learn from their experience.
As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve been hearing a lot about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it’s really interesting how different it felt from the usual Game of Thrones vibe. It was way more lighthearted and genuine, and the shorter episodes – around 30-35 minutes each – made for a really focused six-episode run. Honestly, even if they stop after Season 1, it would still be a fantastic, complete story. A lot of us were hoping for Aegon the Conqueror’s tale to be told as a limited series, and I think it would’ve worked just as brilliantly as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms did.
Let’s consider the trade-offs: While a feature film would showcase Aegon’s conquest impressively, it might sacrifice storytelling depth. We know what happened during the conquest, but very little about Aegon I and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys – beyond what George R.R. Martin has written in his books. A longer format, like a TV series, would have allowed for a more thorough development of these key characters and those around them, particularly during the early years of the Seven Kingdoms. Crucially, a TV show could have delved into the origins of the Targaryens’ ambition, desires, and potential for instability – the very traits that secured their 300-year reign but ultimately led to their dynasty’s collapse.
Honestly, the most surprising thing I heard was that a TV series about Aegon’s Conquest was actually being developed. About two years ago, Mattson Tomlin – who worked on The Batman: Part II – was talking pretty openly about working on it with George R.R. Martin himself! He said they were really diving deep into Fire and Blood, going through it line by line, and he was constantly asking George to explain things and clarify what he meant. Apparently, he really grilled Martin, trying to fully understand what was happening in the story.
We probably won’t ever know exactly what happened behind the scenes at HBO/Warner Bros. Discovery that caused this shift. But considering how much change the studio has gone through since the merger, it’s not surprising to see anything happen.
The story of Aegon’s Conquest, as told in Game of Thrones, is getting a movie adaptation. Let’s hope it’s a good one! What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
