Despite being adored, certain blockbuster films can become less prominent over time. However, that’s not true for “The Social Network“. This historical drama, centering around Facebook’s beginnings, remains just as significant on the 2025 movie lineup as it was in 2010.
For quite some time now, the possibility of a sequel to Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network” has been one of the most intriguing unfulfilled dreams in the film industry. However, it seems that this dream might be coming true soon, but with an unexpected alteration in the main cast.
Almost 15 Years Later, The Social Network 2 Is Finally Happening
Currently, the much-anticipated venture is referred to as “_The Social Network Sequel_”, according to Deadline’s reports. Additionally, details emerged regarding the original content that the creator of “_The West Wing_” is transforming for this new adaptation:
The upcoming film’s screenplay, penned by Sorkin, delves into the narrative behind the Facebook Files, a groundbreaking exposé published by the Wall Street Journal in October 2021. This hard-hitting series of articles exposed the inner mechanisms and numerous negative impacts of the most extensive social network on a global scale.
Instead of the anticipated turn of events, there’s an unexpected swap – as earlier suggested. Regarding “The Social Network Part II,” the conspicuous absence is its original director, David Fincher. This twist, while intriguing, also raises questions about the film’s progression and quality.
In a new development, Aaron Sorkin will take on dual roles as both writer and director for the upcoming sequel of “The Social Network.” Given that this is his first project since 2021’s “Being the Ricardos,” this hiring is crucial due to another highly-anticipated follow-up film.

David Fincher’s Absence From The Social Network Part II Is Concerning, But Expected
According to Sorkin’s 2021 ReelBlend interview, David Fincher was Sorkin’s top pick for the director role initially. However, it appears that this project is moving full steam ahead since Fincher seems to be busy with his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” sequel, which is part of his ongoing collaboration with Netflix, making it unlikely for him to take on the new project.
As a fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of anticipation mixed with apprehension regarding the upcoming production of “The Social Network Part II.” While I have no doubt that Aaron Sorkin will do justice to his own material, given his impressive track record with historical dramas like “Molly’s Game” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” it’s hard not to miss the distinctive style that David Fincher brought to the original film. His unique touch was a significant part of what made the first movie so captivating.
