A PlayStation 1 game originally released in Japan in 1999 (and in the West in 2000) is getting a new release after 27 years. Interestingly, because of when it was made, the game was actually published by Square, not Square Enix. Square and Enix didn’t officially merge to become Square Enix until 2003. While many of the company’s classic games were originally Square titles, this detail isn’t really important.
As a huge fan of the original Front Mission 3 from the PS1 days, I was thrilled to hear it’s getting a special release! For those who don’t know, this awesome tactical RPG came back earlier this year as Front Mission 3: Remake. It’s cool to note that Square Enix didn’t actually make this remake themselves – they licensed it to Forever Entertainment and MegaPixel Studio. It initially came out digitally in January for Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but now they’re doing a limited physical release! That’s fantastic news for people like me who love collecting physical copies of games.
New Limited Release
The game was previously available as a physical copy through imports from Japan. Now, Limited Run Games is releasing a new, updated physical version in Western regions. You can choose between a standard edition for $40 or a classic edition, styled like the original PlayStation case, for $80. The game costs $35 on its own, making the standard edition a particularly good value.

We don’t have a release date yet, but you can pre-order now until April 19th. The games are available on all platforms that the remake will be on, except for PC.
So, I’ve been checking out the scores for the remake, and it’s sitting around a 66 on Metacritic – user reviews are about the same, maybe a little better. Just for comparison, the original game got an 84 on GameRankings! Honestly, it seems like this remake is mostly for those of us who grew up with the original and want to relive those memories. If you’ve never played before, I’d definitely recommend starting with the remakes of the first two games before tackling this one. You’ll probably enjoy it a lot more that way!
