Ryland Grace’s Fate & Project Hail Mary Ending Decision Gets Official Explanation From Directors

Released in 2026, Project Hail Mary has quickly become a major hit, and fans are loving its ending. Critics and audiences agree it’s excellent, as shown by its 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (96% from viewers), an ‘A’ score from CinemaScore, and a $141 million opening weekend. However, a sequel is probably not going to happen, considering how the story concludes. (The following contains spoilers.)

Okay, so the finale of Project Hail Mary really stuck with me. Our hero, Ryland Grace, faces this incredibly tough decision: essentially abandon any hope of returning to Earth to help his new friend, Rocky, and save Rocky’s planet, Erid. He pulls it off, which is great, but then the movie throws another curveball – he’s actually living on Erid, comfortably settled inside this specially-built habitat. The big question, does he ever go back home? The filmmakers smartly leave that open-ended, but Rocky lets us know that Eridian scientists can send him back if he changes his mind. It’s a bittersweet ending, leaving you to ponder what he’ll ultimately choose.

In an interview with SlashFilm, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller discussed why the choice Grace makes is so crucial.

The idea is that a decision makes the situation more impactful. If someone is stranded somewhere, that’s one thing. But if they choose to stay, even when they have the option to leave, it reveals everything you need to know about how they feel about the people or place they’re with.

Project Hail Mary’s Ending Slightly Changed The Book, But It Was Still Perfect

The ending of the Project Hail Mary book and movie have a few key differences. In the book, Rocky confirms the sun has fully recovered thanks to the plan involving the Taumoeba. We also learn Grace has been living on Erid for years and has aged – he’s 71 in Earth years, though only 53 due to time dilation, and now uses a cane because of Erid’s gravity and his travels. The movie adds an extra scene featuring the character Stratt, which doesn’t appear in the book.

Despite the possibility of returning home, Grace doesn’t really want to. He’s worried about what he’d find – decades have passed, the sun is stabilizing, but billions may have perished, and the planet’s future is uncertain.

More than anything, it’s about Rocky and Ryland finding a connection on Erid. The movie doesn’t fully explore this, but Ryland is somewhat of a loner, and Rocky is his only true friend. That friendship, combined with the chance to keep teaching, means more to him than anything he left behind on Earth.

In an interview with EW, author Andy Weir discussed how much time would pass if Grace decided to return to Earth. While another 16 years would pass on the planet, only four to five years would pass for Ryan Gosling’s character. This gives him time to consider a return, and the book hints that he might go back someday. However, it’s also strongly suggested that he’s now settled on Erid and plans to stay there with Rocky.

Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters.
