The new movie ‘Project Hail Mary,’ starring Ryan Gosling, had a fantastic opening weekend, bringing in over $140 million globally and quickly winning audiences over – especially with its adorable space rock character, Rocky. But many people don’t realize the film also features a surprise cameo by Meryl Streep.
Okay, so in the movie, Ryan Gosling’s character builds this cool device to talk to this alien, Rocky, and it works by playing musical sounds – basically, pre-recorded voices. The director, Chris Miller, said they actually had people on set do the voices just to get a laugh out of Ryan and give his character something to react to! Phil Lord, the other director, explained they were trying to figure out what voices would be loaded into a translator like a text-to-speech program. Then they had this crazy idea – what about Meryl Streep? Apparently, Amy Pascal, one of the producers, had worked with her before and asked if she’d do a secret cameo. Meryl was totally on board and had a blast recording a bunch of different variations – she really got into it! It was so fun to learn about how much she enjoyed the process.
Rocky is voiced by James Ortiz, who also physically operated the puppet alongside four other puppeteers. However, for some scenes, his daughters stepped in as stand-ins to help bring the character to life!
