One Piece’s Most Underrated Straw Hat May Have Already Awakened His Devil Fruit

The One Piece manga is currently in a very important part of the story, focusing on the battle against the Holy Knights and Imu. Soon after the Straw Hat Pirates reached the island, the Holy Knights began attacking, hoping to destroy the Giant’s nation. They captured the children as hostages, forcing the Giants to consider surrender. Things became even more dangerous when Imu took control of Gunko and turned many Giants into puppets. The Giants are proud warriors who are committed to defending their home.

For generations, the country of Elbaf has enjoyed peace under the wise rule of King Harald, who believed in building the nation through learning and education, not force. Now, however, the immense power of Imu is compelling the Giants to tear down their own homeland. Amidst the chaos, the Straw Hat Pirates are fighting desperately, and Chopper is playing a vital role in saving the Giants.

One Piece Chapter 1177 Features an Exceptional Ability of Chopper

I watched as Chopper desperately fought the Giants, who were unfortunately being controlled like puppets. He was pushing himself harder than I’d ever seen, using what looked like his most powerful transformation yet. It was incredible, and then something strange happened. The moment Chopper touched one of the Giants, they instantly snapped out of it, becoming normal again! It didn’t seem like luck; it felt connected to Chopper’s abilities. It reminded me of how Devil Fruit powers often evolve – especially the Paramecia types – to affect everything around the user. Take Luffy, for example. He doesn’t just stretch himself; he can make the environment rubbery too!

A One Piece fan and theorist, @DawnStussy on X, recently pointed out something interesting from Volume 20’s SBS. Eiichiro Oda clarified that Chopper’s Devil Fruit doesn’t just mean physically becoming human, but also maturing or regaining mental clarity – essentially, becoming a complete person.

This suggests the Giants were able to think for themselves again because Chopper’s Devil Fruit power somehow broke Imu’s control over them. We don’t fully understand how Devil Fruit awakenings work, particularly with Zoan types. But both Chopper and Luffy have unique Human-Human Fruit variations. Since Luffy’s awakened ability is unusual for a Zoan, it’s possible Chopper’s fruit works in a comparable way.
