Fans of The Apothecary Diaries have a lot to look forward to in 2026! The anime will return with a new season and its first-ever movie. The story took a surprising turn at the end of the second season, and viewers can expect even more mysteries and twists. While we wait for the anime’s return, the official website is offering a special “Maomao Day” feature. Every month on the 22nd, a new illustration of the characters in their everyday lives is revealed. This project began in July 2024 and has already given fans beautiful artwork showcasing seasonal plants.
The project’s initial phase, completed in June 2025, centered on characters from the Rear Palace. The next phase will highlight lesser-known characters from the series, including those associated with the Verdigris House and others who haven’t received much attention. The newest artwork shows Lakan playing Go alone, while Lahan is seen smiling in the background, appearing to be working on scrolls. Both characters are surrounded by white magnolia blossoms, which were intentionally chosen as the monthly theme because they bloom in early spring.
The Apothecary Diaries Will Focus More on Lakan and Lahan in The Upcoming Season
Lakan is Maomao’s father and a skilled military strategist for the Li army. He leads the La Clan, a family known for its intelligence and unique members. Though his nephew, Lahan, is his adopted son, Lakan named him as the clan’s heir. Both Lakan and Lahan have demonstrated their intelligence while serving in the palace, maintaining the La Clan’s respected reputation. They’ll appear more frequently starting in Season 3 and throughout the rest of the series as the story focuses more on the La Clan. While their specific roles haven’t been revealed yet, the upcoming season will be set in the northern farming villages, where significant conflict is developing.
After the Shi Clan’s rebellion failed, Jinshi stopped pretending to be an eunuch and embraced his role as a royal prince. He’s now focused on dealing with the consequences of the Shi Clan’s downfall. When he heard about trouble in the farming villages, he asked Maomao for help to investigate what was happening.
The show’s third season will begin airing in October as part of the Fall 2026 schedule. A new movie is also planned for release in Japan this December. The movie will feature a completely original story, and details about the plot haven’t been revealed yet. A release date for other countries is expected to be announced next year, after the movie premieres in Japan.
