The next Batman movie is scheduled for release in 2026 and will launch a new series of films within the DC Universe. As DC’s most iconic character, Batman consistently takes the lead in adaptations across different media. While his movies often generate the most buzz, there have also been many successful Batman TV shows and video games.
The Dark Knight remains incredibly popular across all forms of entertainment. Currently, two new live-action Batman movies are planned. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in The Batman – Part II, scheduled for release in 2027. Meanwhile, The Brave and the Bold will be a fresh start for the character within James Gunn’s DC Universe, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Beyond live-action films, Batman’s future in the DC Universe looks bright. He’s already made an animated appearance in HBO Max’s Creature Commandos, briefly showing up to capture Doctor Phosphorus. Several animated Batman projects are currently in development, including a significant release planned for 2026.
The next animated Batman movie, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, is highly anticipated. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, it will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2026. This film is a major release for DC Comics.
Batman: Knightfall Is A DC Elseworlds Franchise
The animated movie Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall kicks off a planned series of four Batman films based on the famous ‘Knightfall’ comic book storyline. These movies will feature Bane releasing Batman’s enemies from Arkham Asylum, starting with a film planned for 2026. Importantly, these Knightfall films won’t be part of the main DC Universe being created by James Gunn.
James Gunn previously discussed DC’s plan to create separate stories outside of the main DC Universe, calling them “Elseworlds” projects. We’ve already seen examples of this, like the film Joker: Folie à Deux and the HBO series The Penguin. So, DC is developing both projects connected to the DCU and those that exist independently. It’s possible that Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will be important for shaping these standalone projects.
Batman: Knightfall’s Performance Is Key To DC’s Future Amid James Gunn’s DC Universe
James Gunn, along with Peter Safran, outlined their vision for the future of DC, promising a connected universe across movies, TV shows, animated series, video games, and other platforms. Because other DC universes, like the Arrowverse and Tomorrowverse, have ended, fans are understandably cautious about how many projects outside this new, unified DC Universe will actually be made.
That’s where Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall is important. If the movie – and the three planned sequels – do well, it could convince DC to continue investing in separate animated projects. This would help keep their superhero content new and exciting, allow them to adapt beloved comic book stories, and explore unique takes on familiar characters, separate from the main DC Universe. It all begins with this new Batman film.
