Portraying a voice of a generation was not always easy for Lena Dunham.
In her new memoir, Famesick, 39-year-old Lena Dunham described working with Adam Driver on the show Girls. She claims that Driver, who was an up-and-coming actor at the time, occasionally behaved wildly on set.
Lena described a co-star, Adam, from the HBO series she worked on with Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, and Allison Williams, as having a sometimes violent temper. She recalled one instance during a line rehearsal where she felt he acted like “half-man, half-beast.”
In her memoir, Famesick, Lena described an incident where Adam became enraged and yelled, “Say something!” before throwing a chair at the wall near her. According to The Independent, he then told her, “Wake up, I’m sick of watching you just stare.” Lena was experiencing dissociation at the time, which she later connected to her then-undiagnosed endometriosis.
I’ll always remember the chemistry between those two actors – especially when they played Hannah and Adam. Their scenes together felt so real and intimate, it really drew me into their characters and their relationship. It’s stuck with me ever since!
Lena claimed the planned choreography for their sex scenes wasn’t followed during filming. She said Adam, while acting, would move her around roughly during those intimate moments.
Lena confessed she briefly worried she’d accidentally walked onto the set of a very explicit 1970s film. Thankfully, after pretending to act out a few intimate movements, she stopped the scene.
Lena said the actor, now 42, told her he’d always have feelings for her when they finished filming in 2017, but she never heard from him after that.
TopMob News reached out to Adam’s rep regarding Lena’s comments but has not yet heard back.
Adam hasn’t spoken out about the claims in Lena’s book, but he did tell Larry King in 2017 that he enjoyed working with her.
He shared in an interview that he really appreciated her work, noting her detailed writing style and her willingness to foster a creative environment where everyone felt comfortable experimenting.
As he put it, “It really is the best kind of, great, working environment.”

Although Lena had some mixed memories of working with Adam, she believes her past experiences don’t fully represent who he is as a person.
You know, looking back at my early days, and especially my time on Girls, it really felt like we were all just figuring things out as we went. It wasn’t about setting any kind of example for how to behave in real life, it was more like a fascinating experiment. We took seven people, threw them into a house in Seattle, and just watched what unfolded. It was raw, it was messy, and honestly, that’s what made it so compelling.
She lightheartedly pointed out how surprisingly well things went, joking that it was a miracle no one started dating or got into a fight.
What’s more, as a director and actress, Lena respected Adam’s craft.
She said she loved watching him work. He taught her more about acting than anyone else she’d ever shared a scene with. She felt that performance was the peak of her abilities, and she wasn’t sure she could ever recreate it, as so much of it came naturally from the connection they had.
Lena said she would handle things differently if she could go back and relive Adam’s behavior on set.
Looking back, I wouldn’t take any of that to heart,” she said. “I’d realize everyone was just focused on getting things done, and it wasn’t about me.
