In a powerful and emotional episode of Coronation Street, Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) publicly revealed the months of abuse he endured at the hands of his husband, Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).
Sarah Platt was shocked earlier this week when a badly injured Todd showed up at her door, pleading for assistance. She thought he had relocated to Northern Ireland with Theo, but it turned out he had been held prisoner in his own apartment.
When Todd made to escape, Theo launched a vile attack on him.
Sarah encouraged Todd to see a doctor, but he insisted he wanted to go to the police. In this episode, he confided in Kit and Lisa, sharing the video evidence he’d gathered to support his claims.
As viewers may remember, Theo found the videos and altered them to make it appear as though Todd was the abuser.

Todd revealed that Billy Mayhew was the only person who knew about the hidden cameras. They’d even left Debbie Webster’s wedding early to figure out a way to help Billy escape his troubles. Tragically, Billy passed away on the way home, and Todd still feels responsible for what happened.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on Victoria Street! Gary Windass, looking absolutely furious, trapped Theo and started threatening him with a wrench. He even made sure to point out he was wearing gloves, like he thought it meant no one could ever figure out he was behind it all. It was terrifying to watch.
I remember watching that scene and just feeling the tension release when Theo finally got into the van. It was a huge relief to see them heading to the police station. Lisa’s promise to Todd that they’d locate him felt so important, and honestly, I breathed a sigh of relief right along with Sarah when Gary and Theo walked through those doors. It was a pivotal moment, you could just feel it.

Kit brought Theo in for questioning and arrested him on charges of actual bodily harm and unlawful imprisonment. A frightened Todd witnessed the scene as Theo declared his continued love for him.
I was totally gripped watching everything unfold! Word got around about what happened, and Summer Spellman (Harriet Thorpe) was absolutely devastated to learn what had come of her suggesting Theo might have been involved in Billy’s death. Then, Sarah called with even more bad news – she’d rushed Todd to the hospital because he’d collapsed right in the parking lot. It was just one thing after another!
When I got back to the station, they showed me photos of Todd’s injuries. I pretended to be really shaken up, and told them a story about how things had just escalated during an argument. I said Todd had attacked me, and I’d only defended myself – that’s what I told them, anyway.

Lisa remained skeptical, and after doctors found Todd had a torn spleen, Theo was kept in jail overnight.
She talked to her coworker, Jess Heywood (played by Donnaleigh Bailey), about domestic abuse. The episode featured several scenes illustrating its effects on various supporting characters who had appeared earlier.
This is part of Coronation Street’s larger effort to raise awareness about domestic abuse, and coincides with the release of a new video from ITV’s digital team today.

After the episode aired, Gareth Pierce explained that many survivors of domestic abuse had reached out with their own stories during the storyline. He felt using color in the episode was a strong way to highlight just how common experiences like Todd’s really are.
I haven’t watched the final cut of the episode yet, but filming the scene where Todd first makes eye contact with another character at the police station was a very powerful and emotionally releasing experience.

This episode was difficult to watch at times, but the story team, particularly writer Debbie Oates and director Gary Williams, handled it with thoughtfulness and creativity.
Producer Kate Brooks explained that the episode aimed to show Todd’s story isn’t unique. While his experience is deeply upsetting, it unfortunately mirrors the reality for many people trapped in abusive relationships.
Despite being a very difficult episode to watch, it also shows that even in the toughest times, there’s still reason for hope and help available. At its heart, this is a story about overcoming challenges and finding strength through connecting with others who understand what you’ve been through.
The Coronation Street team consulted with the LGBT anti-abuse charity Galop throughout the development of the storyline.
