The world of Game of Thrones is growing! A significant new update has been released for the first movie based in the realm of Westeros.
Warner Bros. shared its upcoming movie plans at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, including confirmation of a new film set in the Game of Thrones universe.
The new film, revealed earlier this month, tells the story of Aegon I Targaryen and is currently known as “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest”.
The presentation revealed the film is planned for release in 2027 or later. Beau Willimon, known for his work on shows like Andor and House of Cards, is writing the screenplay and also producing the second season of Apple TV+’s Severance.
Aegon I Targaryen is famous in Westerosi history because he was the first king to unite all Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
As a film and TV fanatic, I’m always fascinated by world-building, and Aegon the Conqueror is a prime example. He didn’t just take power – he created a symbol of it. That Iron Throne? He literally had it built from the swords of the people he defeated, a constant, spiky reminder of his dominance. It became the thing everyone fought over for generations. And honestly, it also kind of set a pretty disturbing tone for his family, considering he married two of his sisters. It’s a legacy of power, yes, but a seriously twisted one.

Aegon’s Conquest, written by George R.R. Martin, is the first section of the novel Fire and Blood, which tells the story of the Targaryen family’s rise to power.
Fire and Blood reads much like a historical account, penned by Archmaester Gyldayn to chronicle the creation of the Seven Kingdoms and significant events in the history of Westeros.
This book includes the story that inspired the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. The show depicts a brutal civil war—known as the Dance of Dragons—where Aegon II Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen battled for control of the Iron Throne.
The third season of House of the Dragon is coming in June and will build towards the climactic showdown between the warring siblings and their forces. The series will conclude with its fourth season.
As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s work and the world of Game of Thrones, I’m excited to see them continuing to expand the universe. The upcoming series, Aegon’s Conquest, is the latest addition, and I’m eager to see how they bring this particular part of the history to life. It’s great that they’re digging deeper into the source material!

Game of Thrones first aired in 2011 and concluded in 2019. Its prequel, House of the Dragon, premiered in 2021.
Based on the popular stories of Dunk and Egg, the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered in January and has been renewed for a second season, set to arrive in 2027.
George R.R. Martin is working with the Royal Shakespeare Company to turn his story of King Aerys II Targaryen, known as ‘The Mad King,’ into a play.
Written by Duncan Macmillan, The Mad King takes place a decade before the story of Game of Thrones. The play focuses on the father of Daenerys Targaryen and is scheduled to premiere later this year.
The third season of House of the Dragon is coming to HBO Max in June. You can currently watch seasons 1 and 2, along with Game of Thrones and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, on Sky and NOW. If you’re interested in subscribing to Sky TV, you can find more information about signing up.
