The team behind the beloved comedy ‘Goodnight Sweetheart‘ has spoken about the chance of bringing the show back, just before the release of a new book detailing their ideas for a lost seventh season.
Star of ‘Only Fools and Horses’, Nicholas Lyndhurst, starred in a popular series about Gary Sparrow, a TV repairman with a secret. Gary lived a double life, traveling between the 1990s and the 1940s through a time portal.
Gary experiences love in both time periods – with Yvonne, a businesswoman from the 1990s, and Phoebe, a barmaid from the 1940s. However, managing these two relationships becomes increasingly difficult for him.
I was so thrilled when, after almost 20 years, they brought back ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ with a special called ‘Many Happy Returns’ in 2016! It was amazing to see the characters again, but sadly, it didn’t turn into a whole new season like a lot of us were hoping for.
The show’s creators, Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, are releasing a novel based on their original ideas for future episodes. They turned to crowdfunding to make the book a reality, and it will soon be available to those who supported the project.

In an interview with The Sun, the team expressed excitement about bringing back ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ for another TV series. They believe the original cast would be willing to participate, provided certain terms are agreed upon.
Marks recently shared that if the BBC asked them to do a special reunion episode, he believes the original cast – including Nic and the other women – would likely agree. However, they would want to ensure they’re playing characters their own age.
As a fan, I think bringing back Goodnight Sweetheart would require updating it, much like the writers did back in 2016. They smartly moved the show’s time travel focus from the 1940s and 1990s to the 1960s and the 2010s, and I think a similar refresh would be key to a successful revival.
“We would only do it if we had our cast,” clarified Marks.
Before Amos and Carling played Yvonne and Phoebe, Michelle Holmes and Dervla Kirwan had those same roles, but they both left the show before it finished its original run.

Gran suggested that the show Goodnight Sweetheart might be able to continue on a different channel, explaining that if a television network had a few million pounds to invest, they could fund its production.
As a huge Red Dwarf fan, I was so thrilled when Dave brought the show back with ‘Back to Earth’ in 2009 and continued it for several more seasons. It’s a bit disappointing to hear that UKTV seems to be focusing less on comedies like Red Dwarf right now, though. I’m hoping they’ll change their minds!
Jack Lyndhurst recently reprised his acting career with the Paramount+ revival of ‘Frasier,’ playing a distant professor alongside Kelsey Grammer. However, the new series didn’t reach the heights of the beloved original and was cancelled after just two seasons.
