Meghan Markle knows the pitfalls of social media firsthand.
While meeting with students from Swinburne University of Technology alongside Prince Harry, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, shared her personal experiences with the challenges of online life.
She told the students that for the past ten years, she’s been consistently bullied and attacked, and at one point was the most heavily trolled person globally. Despite everything, she said, she’s still persevering.
Meghan pointed out that social media companies don’t have a strong reason to prevent harassment, which is a concern for her when thinking about the impact on future generations.
She continued, saying that when she considers what everyone is going through, she realizes the problem lies with an industry built on exploiting animals for views and profit. She believes this industry won’t change, so people need to be resilient and not let it affect them.
Meghan has often discussed the online abuse she’s faced since she and Harry started dating in 2016. She’s said it was particularly intense while she was pregnant with her children, Prince Archie, now 6, and Princess Lilibet, now 4.
Meghan Markle shared at SXSW in March 2024 that what should have been a private and joyful period in her life actually resulted in a significant amount of harassment and negativity.

According to a Kensington Palace spokesperson, Meghan Markle is thankful for the support she received on social media over the years. However, since she hasn’t been active on those platforms recently, she has decided to shut down her accounts.
Meghan once explained that the negativity directed towards her wasn’t just petty, but deeply hurtful. She wondered why anyone would intentionally be so unkind, especially when she was pregnant or had a new baby.
Looking back, she realizes that being pregnant and becoming a new mother surprisingly helped her get through a difficult time.
When I found out I was pregnant, my natural maternal instincts took over,” Meghan explained. “You’ll do anything to keep your baby safe, and that includes looking after yourself as well.
At the time, the Suits alum said she stayed away from social media for her “own wellbeing.”
