The official trailer for the new Street Fighter movie is finally out, and it’s exactly the over-the-top, fun, and silly action movie fans were hoping for.
The story briefly introduces the setup: Chun-Li enlists Ryu and Ken to compete in the World Warrior Tournament, drawing inspiration from the classic 90s Street Fighter games.
The movie, directed by Kitao Sakurai, who also made Bad Trip, has a really energetic and visually striking style, full of bright colors and a gritty feel. One scene, featuring Cammy (Mel Jarnson) shooting a rocket launcher from a car, strongly resembles something you’d see with the character Harley Quinn.
The movie includes several nods to the video games. We get a quick glimpse of Ken punching a car, and Zangief (played by Olivier Richters) executes his famous Spinning Piledriver move.
We finally get a good view of 50 Cent as Balrog, and there’s a quick glimpse of Jason Momoa playing Blanka at the very end.
The game’s creators clearly admire the Street Fighter series. They’ve included classic sound effects from Street Fighter 2 and even playfully acknowledge the famous joke about Chun-Li’s strong legs.
Okay, I’m not going in expecting acting masterpieces from this cast, but honestly, I’m really hoping for a totally fun, over-the-top adventure! I want to see some amazing fight scenes and a bunch of cheesy, funny lines. That’s all I’m asking for!
Sakurai seems to have delivered on expectations, and we’re getting closer to the movie’s release on October 16th.
