Fans are eagerly awaiting Season 3 of The Apothecary Diaries, which is still several months away, but promises to be even more captivating than before. The second season ended with a significant twist, and the story will continue to unfold with new mysteries and surprises. Following the downfall of the Shi Clan, life has been drastically altered for Maomao and everyone in the palace. While we wait for the new season and a feature film, a special event in Japan showcased the first two seasons of the anime, complete with a discussion from the voice actors about their experiences and what’s coming next.
The anime’s official website revealed details about the event, including comments from Asami Seto, the voice actress for Loulan/Shisui, about the character and how the second season ended.
The Apothecary Diaries Star Discusses Loulan’s Conclusion in Season 2

Seto explained that the hairpin Jinshi gave Maomao, intended as protection for her, ultimately safeguarded what was most important to her, making for a fulfilling ending to the story.
The second season of the show explored the growing connection between Jinshi and Maomao, while also introducing a new friendship for Maomao. Shisui appears right away and quickly charms audiences with her bright and playful personality. What viewers don’t expect is that Shisui is actually Loulan, the daughter of the powerful Shi Clan and a recently appointed royal consort.
The anime series covered the first four volumes of the original story, centering around a rebellion led by the Shi Clan and focusing on the character Loulan. Loulan dedicated herself to protecting the children of her clan, even though she knew she was facing a grim destiny. Before saying goodbye, she asked Maomao to keep them safe. As a final gesture, Maomao lent Loulan a hairpin, with the hope they would see each other again. Remarkably, that hairpin later saved Loulan’s life, shielding her from a bullet and allowing her to escape from the fortress.
Loulan’s Voice Actor Teases The Character’s Return

Seto also shared his relief that she was still alive, adding with a hopeful tone, “As a viewer, I’m really glad she made it. It means there’s still a possibility I could be in the third season or a movie…though that might not happen!”
The second season of the anime concludes with Loulan trading a hairpin for a jade cicada. Having narrowly escaped a dangerous situation, she adopts the name Tamamo and sets off on a new journey, hoping to finally live life as she chooses. Those who know her, like Maomao, believe she didn’t survive and are unlikely to ever learn the truth.
A recent hint from the voice actor suggests we might see Loulan return in the anime. It’s not yet confirmed whether she’ll appear in the third season or the upcoming movie, but some kind of appearance – even a brief flashback – seems likely. Loulan was a fan favorite, and her story isn’t fully explored in the original source material, leaving her future open to possibilities.
