Olivia Benson will return for another season of Law & Order: SVU. NBC announced on Thursday that the show has been renewed for its 28th season.
There’s been some shake-up in the Law & Order franchise. Peacock and NBC have canceled Law & Order: Organized Crime, starring Christopher Meloni, after five seasons. The future of the original Law & Order series, currently in its 25th season, is uncertain and being evaluated.
Law & Order: SVU Returns as Television’s Longest-Running Drama
You know, the recent news about Law & Order: SVU continuing isn’t exactly new news. Apparently, NBC had already renewed the show for two seasons – all the way through 2026-2027 – but they just hadn’t announced that it was a two-season deal when they first made the decision. It’s a bit of a strange way to handle things, honestly, but I’m just happy to know Benson and the team will be back!
Since its debut in 1999, Law & Order: SVU has become the longest-running drama series on TV. While the cast has changed over the years – with actors like Meloni leaving and joining – Mariska Hargitay’s portrayal of Benson has consistently been central to the show’s success.
Law & Order: SVU Is Still a Ratings Hit on Broadcast and Streaming
Despite being a long-running TV show, Law & Order: SVU has successfully moved into the world of streaming. Its latest season is performing exceptionally well on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, with a 27% increase in viewers compared to the previous season – which was already a record-breaker. The show consistently ranks among Peacock’s ten most popular programs.
Law & Order: SVU continues to be a huge ratings success for traditional television. It’s NBC’s most-watched drama among adults aged 18-49, both on TV and online. Importantly, it’s achieved this popularity without the massive production costs that often cause similar shows to fail when they try to compete with high-budget streaming content.
NBC’s 2026-2027 Schedule Is Still Taking Shape
NBC has been taking its time announcing which shows will be renewed this season. Some believe this is because they’ve decided to use the traditional pilot season approach, where they create and evaluate pilot episodes before deciding which new series to order.
Unlike in the past, when NBC often renewed shows based on initial ideas, the network is now evaluating pilots before making decisions. Initial reactions are positive, especially for the reboot of The Rockford Files, starring David Boreanaz of Bones. It’s expected to be a major new show for NBC in the future.
Popular shows like Law & Order are still waiting to find out if they’ll be back. The Hunting Party and Brilliant Minds are also in a state of uncertainty. However, NBC recently renewed all of the One Chicago series for another season.
Law & Order: SVU is currently in its 27th season and continues to air on NBC. A new episode will be shown next Thursday, April 23rd.
